When writer/director Zack Snyder recently unveiled the new batsuit that Ben Affleck was wearing in the upcoming Batman VS Superman, most of the internet responded very favourably over the new, simplified, more back to the comic book roots redesign. And then promptly went off to make fun of it, because internet.

Well, not everybody, as some fans went and took the officially released black and white image, and decided to spruce it up with some colour. And at least one of them nailed, according to filmmaker Kevin Smith.

As you may recall, Smith (who is not only a major Batman fan and occasional Batman comic book writer, but also one of Affleck’s good friends) provided us with our first clues to the suit’s design when he revealed last year that the “mind-bending” suit was one that we had never seen “on film before”, after he had apparently been shown a photo of it. And during a recent edition of his Hollywood Babble On podcast, Smith elaborated on what he had seen.

“As you may remember, I saw a photo of the Batsuit many months ago, and many people asked online, ‘Is that the picture you saw?’ No, that is a very cool picture, but that is not the picture I saw….They put it on a fake rooftop, and they lit it up. But it was in color, and you could see every piece of detail. So I’ve seen some people online go, ‘Why is this fucking suit any different than the Chris Nolan Batsuit, it’s all one fucking color.’ It’s like, ‘Dude, that’s a monochrome photo. You know what that means, one chrome.”

“That’s not a representation of what the suit looks like. So what the suit looks like, and I was always kind of keeping it quiet until they revealed it, but they’ve revealed it. And you can kind of see, and anybody that…you’ve seen some people take the picture and color it online. If you want to see what this fucking suit looks like, you just go to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, go to the third book, Hunt the Dark Knight…it’s the exact fucking outfit he’s wearing. That’s why I hugged that guy all those months ago.”

“I will put this to you. What if it’s one of a few Batmobiles? What if that’s one of a few outfits in the movie? I suspect that’s the case.”

In case you’ve forgotten, here are a few pics of what the suit from The Dark Knight Returns looks like (including the exo-skeleton version, which I have a feeling is going to make an appearance).

We had already spotted the similarities with Frank Miller’s version of the suit based on the design of the cowl and chest symbol, but this means the movie version will be adopting the color scheme as well, similar to that fan-made colorized version at the top of this post. And all I can say to that, is “Hell yeah!” Have this Dark Knight Detective also actually be, you know, a detective, then that covers 2 out 3 points on my Batman wishlist (the other being the return of yellow, oval chest symbol).

With Batman VS Superman having been shooting for a few months now already, we may just get a proper glimpse at the suit at Comic-Con at the end of July, otherwise there’s probably quite a wait ahead of us for the trailer seeing as the film is only releasing in May 2016.

  1. WRONG: It’s based On The Suit most Heavily Featured in Book 3, so Black and Grey. NOT Blue and Grey.

I would really like the blue and grey look, but going on it being a Hollywood film they won’t go that dramatic with the colours. They’ll probably keep it neutral and stick to the grey and black.
