TRUE DETECTIVE Season 2 will have three leads, set in California

I have no idea what the back half of 2014 has to offer in terms of TV thrills, but whatever comes down the tubes is going to have to be miraculously good to top HBO’s True Detective. Creator/writer/producer Nic Pizzolatto’s decades spanning gothic crime drama anthology series, under Cary Fukunag’s taut direction, was a masterpiece in layered storytelling and just plain ol’ creepiness, and is probably going to cleanup at the Golden Globes like Darryn at a pie-eating contest. Two of those Globes will probably end up in the hands of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who as the show’s leads, simply acted the hell out of it.

Their double act will be exceptionally difficult to follow, which is probably why it looks like Pizzolatto is hedging his bets for Season 2 by going with three leads!

Speaking on the To the Best of Our Knowledge podcast (via The Playlist), Pizzolatto shed some more light on the dynamic and setting of the next season.

“Right now, we’re working with three leads. It takes place in California. Not Los Angeles, but some of the lesser known venues of California and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambience of the place, much like we did with season one”

He also went on to confirm the anthology nature of the show – i.e. each season tells an independent story with a completely different set of characters – as well as just how far along in the process it is.

“The characters are all new, but I am deeply in love with all of them. We have the entire season broken out, and I have a couple of scripts, and we’ll probably start casting within the coming month.”

As Pizzolatto previously mentioned, there’s a good chance that those three leads may be all/majority women detectives (and no, Jessica Chastain will not be one of them), which should give the show a very different spin, as so much of the first season revolved around perceived masculinity, especially in the case of Harrelson’s character.

It’s unclear if this latest bit of info about the “psychosphere ambience” of California lines up with Pizolatto’s previous description of the next season as a show about “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system,” but as long as he keeps the same level of masterful storytelling, I am definitely in for the ride. Also, Alexandra Daddario. If he could find some way to include more Alexandra Daddario, that would be great.

They can put this on the Moon with cattle as the leads and I’d still watch it.
