They're all dead in this new trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's THE STRAIN

There are very few filmmakers in Hollywood with the visual imagination of Guillermo Del Toro (Pacific Rim, Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy 1 & 2, Blade II), and unfortunately for our imaginations he’s often employing it to dream up nightmarish creations. And that definitely appears to be the case with his and Carlton “Lost” Cuse’s upcoming FX vampire series, The Strain.

And if there are any 13-year old girls – and Darryn – who just had their attention piqued by the “V” word, then I’m here to give you fair warning that there are no sparkly boys who stalk girls 140 years younger than them over here. No, as this new trailer suggests, here you’ll find scores of horrific monsters who seem to have a thing for trying to eat your face. And not in a good way.

A thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The Strain is based on Del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s book trilogy of the same name. Del Toro originally conceived of the idea as a TV series, but after failing to find any traction, enlisted Hogan to turn it into what would become a successful book series. Which has now spawned a TV series, because that’s the way the world works apparently.

I’ve never read the books, but I’ve heard nothing but praise for them, especially in the way they smack together various genres and concepts into one crazy tale: there’s the vampire angle, the viral outbreak medical thriller stuff, a lot of the latter part of the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, and the origin of the vampire plague draws on all kinds of mythology.

The Strain is scheduled to start airing on FX on 13 July, 2014.

I’ve read the first few comics – it’s more of a disease or parasite horror than vampire. Violent, graphic and interesting.
