This first trailer for KILL THE MESSENGER doesn't believe in conspiracy theories

It seems that while starring in David O. Russell’s American Hustle, Jeremy Renner developed a taste for portraying real-life individuals with great hair involved in covering up wrong-doings a few decades ago. Only this time, in the upcoming dramatic thriller Kill the Messenger, the hair is on his face instead of his head, and he will be the one blowing the lid off these criminal activities.

Said criminal activity being one of the biggest US government scandals in the 1980’s, as journalist Gary Webb discovered that several government agencies were turning a blind eye to, and in some cases facilitating, the importing and distribution of massive shipments of Colombian crack cocaine into Los Angeles, so that the proceeds could be funneled back to Contra rebel fighters in Nicaragua, who the US goverment supported but could not directly fund due to a recently passed amendment.

It’s a story so unbelievable that it just has to be true, and based on this first trailer, it will be every bit as riveting and shocking as it was for the world back then. 

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Bourne Legacy”) leads an all-star cast in a dramatic thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation’s streets…and further alleges that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and using the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop his investigation, Webb keeps digging to uncover a conspiracy with explosive implications. Kill the Messenger also stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Liotta, Tim Blake Nelson, Barry Pepper, Oliver Platt, Michael Sheen, Paz Vega, Michael Kenneth Williams, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Andy Garcia, and is scheduled for release on October 10, 2014.
