There’s no funny quip or snarky remark that I can type that does a better job of encapsulating how I feel about this trailer for upcoming Rapture-thriller Left Behind, than Nicolas Cage’s face on this movie’s poster. Just look at it. Clearly, only two seconds before that picture was taken, it finally dawned on him just how poor the movie he was starring in actually looked.

And if the movie title sounds familiar to you, it’s because it’s based on a series of popular novels by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LeHaye, that was turned into a trilogy of low-budget Christian movies starring Kirk Cameron by Cloud Ten Productions back in 2000. Jenkins and LeHaye had “naively” sold them the film rights before the novels had become huge bestsellers, and when the film came out, the pair were disheartened by the poor quality of the end-product. So much so that they sued Cloud Ten Pictures to get their rights back on the grounds that the production studio hadn’t delivered a product good enough to meet the terms of the contract. The case dragged on for 9 years, but in the end the courts ruled in favour of Jenkins and LeHaye, and so set out to make a film that finally would live up to their lofty vision of the material.

And somehow we still ended up with a sleepy Nicolas Cage in a movie that looks like it could be an episode of something on the Hallmark Channel.

“Left Behind” follows Rayford Steele (Nicolas Cage) who is piloting a commercial airliner just hours after the Rapture when millions of people around the globe simply vanish. Thirty thousand feet over the Atlantic, Rayford is faced with a damaged plane, terrified passengers, and a desperate desire to get back to his family. On the ground, his daughter, Chloe Steele (Cassi Thomson) is among those left behind, forced to navigate a world of madness as she searches for her lost mother and brother. The movie is based on the New York Times bestselling book series of the same name, co-authored by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye. Based on the Bible and published in 32 different languages, the series has sold more than 65 million copies and is one of the best-selling fiction series of all time.

Left Behind also stars Chad Michael Murray, Cassi Thomson, Nicky Whelan, Lea Thompson, Jordan Sparks, Quinton Aaron and Martin Klebba, and will be leaving audiences behind as from October 3, 2014

Weird. I’ve seen the original films – I’m a bit of a sucker for this kind of apocalypse film. But the closest I’ve come to entertainment was the second Meggido film. Hopefully the Cage version will do a better job.

That poster encapsulates the human race perfectly. The 2 guys are standing there looking confused while the women stare at them with a “what did you do?” expression.

As a somewhat Christian I am so hoping this will be a success. If only to pave the way for more Christian books to be made into worthwhile movies. I’m thinking of Frank Peretti’s Piercing the Darkness and This Present Darkness. Or even the brilliance of The Oath would make for great viewing, either as a movie or even better as a TV Series.

Growing up in a very religious household, I’ve seen my fair shar Christian-themed movies, and the problem I have with so many of them, is that then tend to focus so much on whatever message they want to get across, that they often forget to actually also make a good movie.

It is. I stopped watching Christian movies after the second one. The ballad of Billy something. It is why I loved the Christian Rock bands like Bride so much. They made great music but did not skip on the message they wanted to get across.

As a Christian, I’m hoping this movie tanks. Having gone through Bible School and also listened to many of the world’s top pastors and Bible scholars teach on this topic, the entire premise of Left Behind is not Biblical. There are some awesome Bible stories that Christians believe to be true, some that could be done without needing to be even slightly preachy, and yet this movie is happening. Again.

I cannot comment on how Biblical the book is, as I have not read it myself. But other people I have talked to said it was an awesome what if type of tale.

That is exactly what it is. It is a “What would happen if God took all the Christians away?”. The authors claimed it was Biblical, even went as far as to write a book showing how their series is Biblical. I read that book and it did a good job of getting me to believe this theory. Then I read the Bible, and then studied the Bible, and then began to watch teaching videos by great Bible scholars. It was at this stage I began to understand that the Left Behind series is not Biblical at all. I don’t have an issue that it exists, I have an issue that they claim it is Biblical.

Oh man. That has to be one of the worst looking movie posters of the year. Fuck. Not even Twilight was that bad…
