Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • We start off today with what is officially the funniest thing I’ve seen on the internet all week.

Apparently, they had to shoot the movie 9 times.

  • I’m not going to lie, I had some mild heart palpitations when I read the words “Robert Pattinson tipped to be next Indiana Jones” this morning, but luckily, as I discovered a few seconds later once I stopped seeing red, this is merely a rumour from British tabloid site The Daily Mail. The online rag apparently has one Los Angeles insider who claims that “Disney is looking at its long-term options for the Indiana Jones franchise. They feel that the series has huge potential on many levels, starting with the films leading to other spin-offs like games which can generate more money than movies. Rob is top of the initial list because he has showed his acting stripes away from Twilight. But the competition will be stiff.”

It’s at this point that I would remind you that no other news publication, actually based in Los Angeles, has reported anything even remotely like this. Pinch of salt? Hell, I would say you need to visit Bolivia for enough salt for this one.

  • Poster of the Day: Star Wars

  • While Marvel may landing directors for their other long-term projects with ease, the rather embarrassing saga of Ant-Man continues. With Edgar Wright’s replacement Adam McKay pulling out of negotiations, and Ruben Fleischer rather trying to prove he ain’t afraid of no ghost, that only left Rawson Thurber from Marvel’s initial list of directors.

Except, according to some stories posted in the early hours of this morning, even Thurber had turned the project down. But, it appears that some people had been jumping the gun a bit, as AICN’s Jeremy Smith later confirmed that Thurber had not even been offered the gig at all. So basically, after all that confusion, still no Ant-Man director. Sigh.

  • Whatever faults you may find with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot, you would have to be the Colonel H. Stinkmeaner of movies to not be in awe of it’s impressive visual effects. And now digital FX company MPC have pulled back the curtain a bit, to give a breakdown on some of those amazing scenes.

  • And now for some sad news. If you’re a fan of crazy, colourful, highly imaginative space operas, then 2014 just become 50% less awesome. The Wachowski’s latest sci-fi epic, Jupiter Ascending, has been pushed back at the 11th hour from July 18, 2014 to Feb. 6, 2015. While some publications are fearing that it’s being pushed into Q1 dumping ground because of quality reasons, the new 7 month delay is apparently to complete some of the film’s extensive visual effects. Besides, I think the whole “January/February release = bad movie” has been thoroughly blown out of the water by flicks like The LEGO MovieNoah and The Grey.
  • Following on from yesterday’s massive dump of Star Wars: Episode VII set pics, TMZ are it again with another 22 pics (what, are they just sleeping on the set now?). But instead of just random guys dressed like the latest fashion trend in Cape Town’s Kloof Street, this actually features a still-being-constructed version of a certain hunk of junk you may recognize.
  • I’ve never quite understood the internet’s fascination with unboxing videos, but when it’s Morgan Freeman opening one of the most famous boxes in movie history, then I’m all for it.

  • If I’m correctly reading this statement from James Cameron, then we may just have him to thank for getting another dose Arnold Schwarzenegger Terminator action soon. Apparently the folks behind upcoming re-quel (that’s a sequel that’s also a reboot) Terminator: Genesis, reached out to the man who started off the franchise – but who hasn’t really been involved in it since Terminator 2: Judgement Day – for some advice, and he seemingly steered them in the Governator’s direction.

“My goal in that was not to insinuate myself artistically but to try to make sure they stayed true to the Terminator character and the idea of Arnold being in it. Because he’s a friend of mine and we’ve been through all the wars together and everything. And I wanted them to see the possibilities I saw for what they could do with this character.

And then David Ellison took the project over from Megan and he and I met a couple times. And so Arnold is very much front and center in the new Terminator films. So I might have had some tiny effect on it — but obviously they had to make the right financial and creative decisions themselves so I’m not trying to take credit for the film that they’re making but that was my goal in being loosely attached to the film but I won’t have any credit on it.”

  • I am totally conflicted in my feelings regarding this latest edition of CinemaSins’ Everything Wrong With… On the one hand, they’re targeting Gravity, a film I love so damn much and really don’t want to pick at, but on the other hand, it’s Neil deGrasse Tyson doing the picking!
