Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Hold on to your spines, folks, because BaneCat is back! Let the games begin…

“It’s kind of unlikely (starring in TRUE DETECTIVE). In fact, I’m kind of strapped time-wise doing Avengers 2, and Mission: Impossible 5 is rearing its head, and then they want to do another Bourne movie. It’s unlikely I can find the time right now. And that’s all right. It’s just really high-class problems – pretty awesome to have. Even if I really wanted to do it, which I don’t, I couldn’t.”

  • Hail, Thanos! Fresh from being cast as the biggest and baddest (and purplest) of big bads in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, Josh Brolin will be toning down his galaxy conquering aspirations quite significantly for his next project, as he has signed up to co-star in the Coen Bros’ next flick, Hail, Caesar. He’s joining the already cast George Clooney – who is a frequent collaborator with the Coens – in a movie that follows “a Hollywood fixer in the 1950s working to keep a studio’s stars in line.”
  • Here’s a new character poster for Guardians of the Galaxy that shows off the true stars of this movie.

  • We’ve heard talk that Sigourney Weaver would be back for the three Avatar sequels, despite he character having, well, died in the first film, but now it’s finally been confirmed: She is coming back. As another character. Wait, what? You’re going to have to explain yourself, Mr. James Cameron.

“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.”

Well that didn’t clarify anything! Thanks a lot, Cameron!

  • If you’ve read my Edge of Tomorrow review, you would have seen me mention that the film has a few plot holes and an ending so puzzling that it makes Tom Cruise maniacally jumping up and down on a couch seem like the most easily explainable thing ever. If you’ve seen the movie already, and want to know what I’m talking about, then Film School Rejects has a great write-up on the 12 Big Questions Left Unanswered by Edge of Tomorrow. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, then I would suggest just bookmarking this for now, because SPOILERS!
  • Actor Matt McGorry may only be known as Prison Guard Bennett in Netflix’s brilliant Orange Is the New Black, but he has a dream, damn it. A dream to take his clothes off on a stage next to Channing Tatum!

  • From cooking meth to the leader of the most powerful nation in the world, Bryan Cranston may soon be breaking bad president style if Steven Spielberg has his way. The Oscar winning director/producer is looking to produce a TV mini-series adaptation of All the Way, a Broadway play centered around US President Lyndon B. Johnson for which Cranston just won a Tony Award over the weekend for his turn as the President. The play is set right after the assassination of JFK, after which Johnson is sworn into office, and follows his first term in office during which he passed several critical civil rights legislations.

It’s unclear just which network Spielberg will be pitching this too (based on his track record, HBO would be a good bet) and also whether Cranston would be willing to reprise his role, but if so, the pairing could make for some damn fine TV.

  • And we end off today, on what might just be the greatest pic currently found on the internet: A mutton-chopped, leather vest and aviator sunglasses wearing Andrew Dice Clay, standing next to Nicolas Cage who is decked out in a cowboy hat, blue blazer, prayer beads, gun holsters, tasseled pants, a pimp cane and a t-shirt with his own face on it! Trust me, no matter how hard you try in life, you will never be as awesome as this.

I like it when a property reuses an actor. It gives you a chance to experience their range. Maybe as a lark Weaver will die in every Avatar and always resurface as a new character.
