Jason Momoa confirmed to play Aquaman in DAWN OF JUSTICE and JUSTICE LEAGUE?

If you feel as if you’ve heard this story before, there’s a simple reason for that: You have. At the tail end of last year, before every superhero and his dog had joined Batman VS Superman (as it was still sensibly being called at the time), rumours surfaced that Jason Momoa, fresh off expanding the world’s knowledge of equine rape metaphors as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones, had joined the production in some unspecified role. An unspecified role that soon became a bit more specific when the usually very reliable Devin Faraci at Badass Digest claimed that “a very trusted source” had informed hi that Momoa would actually be playing Aquaman, King of Atlantis and the Justice League’s resident fish-talking, trident wielding underwater badass.

Momoa not only denied the role quite vehemently, but even his involvement in the movie at all – a denial he has kept up since then. As recently as a week ago, he was still shooting down the story, explaining to the crowd at the Motor City Comic Con (via CB) just how the story started.

“I think it started when people said ‘What superhero would you play?’ And I’d say Batman and Superman, they’d be awesome together. Then people were like, ‘He’s in ‘Batman vs. Superman!’ I’m like, I really like Lobo. ‘HE’S LOBO!!’ And then some asshole was like ‘He’s Aquaman!’ And I’m like — what did you just call me? Where the fuck do you pull out Aquaman? Seriously… And then it shows up on the Internet. Not that it’s a bad rumor.”

So, according to that, just a bad case of the internets then, right?

Well, maybe not, because as JJ Abrams, Benedict Cumberbatch and the rest of the cast on Star Trek Into Darkness so delighted in enlightening us, actors lie about roles all the time. Especially if it’s a big one that would be a potentially big reveal in-film. And according to HitFix‘s Drew McWeeney, another reliable font for these things, that’s exactly what’s happening as they are he is also hearing that Momoa will indeed be playing Aquaman. What’s more, he claims to know how the character will be introduced.

“One of the things that has driven me crazy since the release of “Man Of Steel” is when people say that the last act of the film is a problem since there’s no consequences for Superman after all of the destruction that results from his battle with Zod. I felt like it was pretty clear walking out of the theater that the next film would have to be all about consequences. I suspected that Lex Luthor would use the destruction as a way of making Superman look like a monster, and it sounds like that is indeed one of the major ideas that they’re playing with in “Dawn Of Justice.”

Someone else who’s not particularly happy about what happened in that film is Aquaman. I’m not sure if that’s the actual name they’ll use or not, but what we’re hearing is that he is not pleased about the World Engine and what it did to the Indian Ocean.”

So its just as I suspected then: Fish do not take too kindly to giant dubstep machines. Jokes aside, I kind of like the fact that it’s the appearance of Superman, the consequences of his actions – good or bad – that are bringing these other heroes out of the woodwork. We’ve already heard that Ben Affleck’s Batman is supposed to be this grizzled veteran who has been doing his thing in the shadows for years, but is stepping into the light to confront the Man of Steel, so why not Aquaman?

Not that he will be getting that much shouty face time with Supes initially though, as McWeeney goes on to explain that much like has been rumoured for the rest of the Justice League team, Aquaman will only be making a small appearance in Dawn of Justice before playing a big part in Justice League itself.

As I said when this story popped up online, as a fan of Momoa’s since his Stargate Atlantis days, I think he can make a great Aquaman, and not just because of tenuous Atlantean heritage Yes, he may not be the blonde hair, blue eyed version from the comics, but he has the physical presence, regality and just plain old badassness to make the character work quite well on screen.

As good a fit as he is for the role, I expect Momoa to probably deny all of this right up until the moment Zack Snyder calls him on stage at Comic-Con next month.

  1. I really don’t mind Aquaman, but Jason Momoa is too dark for Aquaman. He looks like he was born to be Lobo.
