Rumour: Solo Batman film scheduled for 2019

Did somebody declare this Superhero Movie Rumour Friday and I just didn’t get the memo? So after hearing some Marvel-ous rumours about Ant-Man and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, it’s time to see what the competition is up to.

When WB’s DC Comics movie lineup leaked a short while ago, I commented on the lack of a solo Batman movie, and predicted that if they were to add it, it would probably be after Man of Steel 2 in 2018. Seems like I should play the lotto this weekend, because according to Latino Review, I’m right on the money.

They claim to be hearing that WB/DC are planning a new solo movie for Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader to be released in 2019, and that the current working title for this flick is simply The Batman. No relation to The Wolverine, of course. Now while Latino Review has been very hit and miss with the superhero movie rumours as of late, I would say that for this one, while it may say “rumour” up there in the headline, you can probably reclassify this to “very good guess”.

The Batman franchise is far too lucrative for the studio to sweep under the rug, so a solo film is an inevitability. With the immense popularity of Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, it also makes perfect sense to give it some breathing room before having a new Batman movie show up. So yes, this certainly feels legit, especially that very simplified title.

Also, the timelines match up nicely for Affleck as well. After finishing up his back to back shooting stints on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, he will then go on to tackle his next directorial effort, the adaption of Dennis Dehane’s period gangster novel Live By The Night. That film is scheduled for release in Q3 2016, which means that Affleck would then have just over two years available during which he and the WB brass could work out and shoot the solo Batman movie. I said “he and the WB brass” because you have to know that there’s a chance that Affleck may just take the director’s chair for this one as well. After earning universal critical acclaim for his work behind the camera and pocketing an Oscar recently for Argo, there’s simply no way that WB won’t try to get him to take the gig as well. Latino Review speculates that they may have offered it to him already, which would explain why his current deal with WB took so many months to work out.

If there was ever a way for WB to do a new series of solo Batman films, which they could push as completely matching up to or even surpassing the gold standard set by Nolan, it would be to have Affleck in the director’s chair. I know I would be buying a ticket immediately when the news broke, even if it’s just to see how Affleck would somehow find a way to transport Batman’s story to Boston.
