BATMAN V SUPERMAN rumours: Wonder Woman's costume and story, Batman's hideout, Lex Luthor's motivations

I think the folks at JoBlo are now just spending most of their days with a glass to their ear, pressed up against the walls of major movie studio HQ’s, as they have just been picking up rumour after rumour – or as they call them, “scoops” – lately. After dishing the possible dirt on a number of Marvel movies last week, they’re now focusing on the competition’s upcoming Batman v Superman: This Is Still a Silly Title.

With the Zack Snyder helmed film only scheduled for release in 2016, it’s going to be quite some time before we know whether any of these scoops from their “trusted and proven source” actually check out, but on the off chance that this is legit – and some of it definitely feels that way – I’m throwing up a big SPOILER WARNING for now. Details after the pic.

The source kicks off with details on Gal Gado’s Wonder Woman, and specifically what her costume will look like, and which weapons she’ll be packing.

The reports of Wonder Woman wearing the pre-new52 jacket and leggings outfit are inaccurate. Completely. The description of the outfit from our source uses the term “badass” on multiple occasions. This Wonder Woman is ripped right from the comics and has a “traditional, yet sleeker” costume that’s “battle ready.” She’ll have a blue leather skirt, silver-armored cuffs that reach to her elbows, golden tiara (with a design of some sort in the center, possibly the red star) and a variation of the traditional-looking red top (no word on additional armor on it). Her overall appearance is described as “Amazon warrior princess” and definitely not an urban reimagining. She’s there to kick ass and that’s readily apparent. Word is that WB is getting a VERY positive response on her appearance to those they’ve shown it to.

That’s right, not just a golden lasso here. Wonder Woman will have no less than FOUR weapons, including shield, sword, spear, and of course, the traditional lasso. It’s also noted that she will wear the shield on her back, Captain America style, when not in use.

So in other words, more like the look on the left than the one on the right – which had previously been touted as a costume choice for the movie –  of the image below.

I’m still of the opinion that any heroes other than Batman and Superman will probably have nothing than glorified cameos in this movie, with their roles expanded on in Justice League, as that just makes the most narrative sense. As such, I’m less inclined to believe the next tidbit, which states that Wonder Woman will have a far more substantial role than previously guessed at.

Her character will be introduced as “Diana” in the film initially before we ever see her as Wonder Woman. She will have a fair amount of screen time and will team up with Batman and Superman for the final battle against an un-named villain who may be working or controlled by Lex Luther. Her origin will be intentionally vague, but she is brought into the fold to show that there are other superheroes in the universe other than Superman.

JoBlo’s source also shed some light on Batman’s relationship with Superman, and where he will be hanging his cowl every night.

Batman is said to be a veteran crime fighter that will do anything it takes to get the job done. Superman is a rule follower, so they often don’t see eye to eye, which is a consistent dynamic with their initial relationship. As for Batman’s usual digs; Wayne Manor is there, but Bruce Wayne chooses to live on the property in a modern-looking cottage by a lake (not a van down by the river, though). Underneath the cottage is a modernized Batcave, which houses a Batwing, along with his other gear (Batmobile, batarangs, etc.).

lexluthor-speech-to-supes

As I’ve mentioned previously, ever since watching Man of Steel I have been of the opinion that the wanton destruction caused by Superman’s battle with Zod in Metropolis, is the perfect in for Lex Luthor. Having him be the one to rebuild the city and restore it to the way it was before these two alien beings reduced it to kindling and gravel dust, puts a nice spin on why he vilifies Supes so much, and would make for a very interesting dynamic between them. However, JoBlo’s source doesn’t mention any of this, instead hinting that Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor apparently finds his motivation in nothing more than good old fashioned megalomania.

Lex Luthor (who is rumored to have longish red hair at the beginning of the film) thinks he is god’s gift to humanity and the best that humanity has to offer, which leads to his hatred of Superman. Because Superman is basically a “god” it makes Lex feel less than perfect. Lex tries to sway people to dislike and fear Superman – and many people ARE swayed. Some see Superman as a hero, while others see him as the ultimate threat.

Personally, I find all these rumours to be a bit of a mixed bag. While I’ve always thought Wonder Woman’s costume should lean more towards the warrior side of her heritage, instead of just looking a Fourth of July Baywatch costume, the black leggings and leather jacket look is far more practical and realistic to put on screen. Then again looking at how Ben Affleck’s batsuit is pulled straight from the comic book page, it’s clear that practicality and realism is not that high on the agenda here.

Also, while this report about Luthor does gel with others also hinting at his godly narcissism, I would still prefer it if he wasn’t such an out and out, almost moustache-twirling villain. That being said, as long as Luthor’s plan this time is more than just a real-estate scam, this would already be a gigantic step in the right direction.

  1. I don’t understand why they call it Batman v Superman in the first place. Especially since Superman is the character starting their whole universe reboot thingy whatchamacallit, not Batman.

Also never understood why people threw such a shit fit about the New 52 costume.

I really dug the costume actually. Fighting in a high cut swimming costume is retarded.
