Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • R.I.P. Eli Wallach. Sadly we got greeted this morning by the news that the Hollywood legend, most famous for playing the bandit Tuco in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and Calvera in The Magnificent Seven has passed away at the age of 98. Wallach was one of the pioneers of method acting, and received several Tony and Emmy Awards, as well as an Honorary Oscar, in a career that spanned six decades. He is survived by his wife, three children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
  • With Game of Thrones fourth season recently wrapping up, you may be going into some Westeros withdrawal. Sure there’s the Soccer World Cup to keep you distracted, but it’s just not the same, hey? But what if it could be?

  • Earlier today the news broke that Shane Black will be rebooting Predator for Fox, and mentioned surprisingly nonchalantly in THR’s original report of that news is the fact that Black has actually met with Chris Hemsworth about starring in Doc Savage, the writer-director’s long in development live-action adaptation of the 1930’s pulp hero. And based on my wife’s face every time he’s on screen, I would say that if there was ever an actor to play the towering, physically perfect ubermensch hero, Hemsworth would be it.
  • The upcoming documentary Mudbloods, which shows off the world of real life Quidditch and one team’s journey to the Quidditch World Cup, has received a Fall release date. Yes, quidditch, that game from Harry Potter played on flying brooms. No, this is not a joke. Here’s a poster to prove it.

  • There have been some complaints recently about Ster Kinekor’s IMAX 3D screen at Gateway in KZN, currently the only IMAX screen in the country (that will be changing this weekend though with a new screen at Pretoria’s Grove Mall). Ster Kinekor have responded to the complaints – which mainly have to do with the smaller size of the screen compared to the old IMAX, picture clarity and the cinema’s sound quality – by basically saying that “nope, there’s nothing wrong here, just a small handful of moaners making noise”. I may be paraphrasing a bit there.
  • Edgar Ramirez (Wrath of the Titans, Zero Dark Thirty) will soon be seen in Scott Derrickson’s cop-horror thriller Deliver Us From Evil. When asked by IGN if he would be seen in Derrickson’s most recent high profile gig, Marvel’s Doctor Strange, Ramirez dropped this little potential bombshell, by saying that “We’ve been talking”. Talking about what Ramirez? Lead roles as a certain Sorceror Supreme? Playing the bad guy? Maybe just a cameo as a low level demon? Be specific, man!
  • Do you feel young, vibrant and full of life? Allow me to remedy that. Two days ago, 23 June, was the 20th anniversary of the release of Forrest Gump. Yes, 20 years. How are you feeling now, Oom/Tannie? To cheer you up a bit, here’s an honest trailer for the Oscar winning Tom Hanks flick.

  • And on today’s episode of Weird Star Wars: Episode VII rumours, UK tabloid The Sun is reporting that Tom Cruise has reportedly met with writer-director JJ Abrams in London about shooting a cameo in the upcoming flick. He’s going to play Jar Jar Binks, isn’t he?
  • And speaking of cameos, James Gunn has finally confirmed that yes, Nathan Fillion will indeed have a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy, but no, it won’t be as Richard Ryder aka Nova, as those rumours have been “greatly (and entirely) exaggerated.” Schmoes Know think they, well, know what it is though, and if true, would be damn cool.
  • Life in American west in the 1800’s may have been plain ol’ crap, but they did have awesome facial hair (two facts that Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways To Die in the West frequently reminds us of). So if you’re going to make a hilarious western short film, who better to narrate it than the owner of the greatest moustache on TV, Park & Rec‘s Nick Offerman? He’s just the hairy lipped cherry on top of director Eric Kissack and writer Kevin Tenglin’s The Gunfighter though, which is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in ages.
