There have been many famous filmmakers – like Michael Bay, David Fincher, Antoine Fuqua, etc – who made the transition from music videos to feature films. Usually though, they were behind the camera for those music videos, not the ones making music in front it. But that’s what Joe Hahn, mix-master DJ for Grammy Award winning rock band Linkin Park, will be trying to do with his feature film directorial debut Mall (also known in France where its already opened as A Day to Kill).
Based on this first trailer for the film, it appears to be a smashed together mix of topical social commentary on public shootings, teenage identity angst, family drama and some really trippy drugs. Basically a music video with a better story, to be honest. A notion not dissuaded by the fact that Hahn got his bandmates to do the film’s soundtrack.
Malcom’s done with his life. Only the noise of Crystal Meth gives him a reason to keep going – everything else it has long regardless. Equipped with a bag full of weapons and self-made bombs, he makes his way to the nearby mall to really stir things up. On his personal war campaign, he not only changes his life radically, but also the fate of other people who are in the wrong place at the same time: a teenager whose favorite pastime is smoking pot in his dreary existence, a housewife whose best days have been left behind, a greedy businessman whose only desire is to increase his wealth and a depressed pervert.
Mall stars Vincent D’Onofrio (who co-wrote the script), Gina Gershon, Cameron Monaghan, Peter Stormare and James Frecheville. There’s no wide release date set yet.
