Luke Evans is an actor that has been teetering on the brink of proper stardom for years, despite having good roles in massive movies like The Hobbit: The Desolation of SmaugImmortals and Fast and Furious 6. Maybe the main reason why he’s never made that leap into the spotlight is because he’s always too solid in his roles. Maybe he needs to take a page from human meme-generator Nicolas Cage’s book and just go a little batty to draw people’s attention.

That appears to be exactly what he’s doing – well, in a manner of speaking – in Dracula Untold, a new retelling of the origin of the world’s most famous vampire, and which totally is not borrowing from the Castlevania video games at all.

As the first trailer for the flick shows, there is indeed a bit of derivativeness creeping in, but there are also some really cool moments. Alex “Dark City” Proyas was originally set to helm the film back when it was still being billed as Dracula: Year Zero (insert “obvious Batman reference” joke here), and while I would love to have seen what he could do with this, at least it seems like his replacement, newcomer Gary Shore, also has a flair for the visually dramatic. Especially when it comes to everybody’s favourite flying rodents.

Dracula Untold also star Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, Diarmaid Murtagh and Samantha Barks, and will be biting the box office’s neck from October 17, 2014.
