Depending on any given day of the week, you’re going to be hearing a ton of Star Wars rumours. Whether it’s Harrison Ford breaking every bone in his body because a Hutt fell on him or the secret villain being Salacious Crumb, there isn’t a lot of concrete info out there. But what we do know is that Andy Serkis will be in the sequel. Here’s what he has to say.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Serkis spoke to Sci-Fi Now about the film, mentioning the “Imaginarium”:

It’s extraordinary. I grew up with Star Wars and was a massive fan of the original films. I never imagined in a million years that I’d be engaging with this. It’s just come about so organically.

JJ Abrams and I met, and we just had this incredible kind of vibe between us. He said, ‘You’d fit really well in this universe,’ and I said, ‘I think I probably could.’ We’re working very closely, as I say, in two ways: the Imaginarium is providing all of the performance characters, and I myself am playing a character in it.

I’m thrilled, deeply excited. Sitting at that read-through the other day was just extraordinary. It was an amazing event; being with the original cast was just incredible. I just think the script is so wonderful, and both the old and the newbies in the cast are just so thrilled and excited to get together.

So what does all that carefully-worded text mean then? It’s not too much of a stretch exactly to imagine that there’ll be some CGI work involved. Specifically in the alien department which will most likely mix live-action effects with digital. The Imaginarium is a company that deals specifically in such motion capture effects and Serkis is damn good at getting maximum emotion out of such performances.

That being said, Serkis is fun to watch with or without motion capture. But if he is bringing his mo-cap game with multiple other actors, that could very well be another reason to get excited for Episode VII.
