If there’s one thing that each season of Sherlock has in common with one another, it’s that the wait between all of them is agonisingly lengthy. It took 18 months for season 3 to rock up after the second season had finished airing, and it looks like the wait may be even longer for season 4. Unless a quick special episode were to be released in the interim.
With Benedict Cumbermatch and Martin Freeman now very much in demand for Hollywood roles that require deep voiced performances and someone to furrow their brow with worry, Sherlock season 4 most likely won’t arrive until 2017 realistically. But according to Watson himself, a Christmas special is in the works, for December 2015.
Speaking with The Telegraph, Freeman revealed that the BBC was keen to give the popular sleuth show a yuletide special:
“If that’s going to be a special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand.”
Filming will most likely only start in 2015, but Freeman did also add that his real-life wife Amanda Abbington will be back as Watson’s onscreen wife Mary, and that she’s on the show “for the foreseeable future.” It’s not too far fetched an idea that Sherlock would get a Christmas special. The BBC usually goes for such ideas, with Doctor Who, Coronation Street and various other commissioned programs often joining in on that theme.
Still, I’m more excited for season 4, to see just what the hell is up thanks (MASSIVE PLOT TWIST NOT TO BE REVEALED HERE). Although the biggest trick in Sherlock, is getting Cumbermatch, Freeman and showrunner Steven Moffat on a synchronised schedule.

The only reason Stephen Moffat is so busy is because he takes long holidays inbetween filming Doctor Who. And then when he actually films, he takes forever on each episode. Ultimately producing only half a fucking season in the time it would usually take Russel T. Davies to film 2. TWO!!!!
