Guillermo Del Toro talks PACIFIC RIM 2 – Spoilers and new blood

You all know by now that we happen to be massive fans of Pacific Rim. Even though the film dropped several inconsistent logic bombs, it was a well directed and fun blockbuster that managed to completely jettison the standard tropes of a high budget mid-year film and create something different. And it was damn good news to hear last week that a sequel was on the way. It may be quite a while off before we see it, but it’ll be worth it according to director Guillermo Del Toro.

Pacific Rim (30)

“We are three years away, so to spoil anything would be fantastically silly of me,” Del Toro said to The Wall Street Journal .

What I can tell you: [screenwriter Zak Penn] and I really went in, we started with [screenwriter Travis Beacham] about a year and a half ago, kicking ideas back and forth. And, admittedly, I said to Zak, let’s keep kicking ideas till we find one that really, really turns the first movie on its ear, so to speak. (…) It was hard to create a world that did not come from a comic book, that had its own mythology, so we had to sacrifice many aspects to be able to cram everything in the first movie.

Namely, for example “the Drift”, which was an interesting concept. [Then there was] this portal that ripped a hole into the fabric of our universe, what were the tools they were using? And we came up with a really, really interesting idea. I don’t want to spoil it, but I think at the end of the second movie, people will find out that the two movies stand on their own. They’re very different from each other, although hopefully bringing the same joyful giant spectacle. But the tenor of the two movies will be quite different.

While Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Beckett and Rinko Kikuchi’s Mako Mori will be back to pilot a new Jaeger, you can also expect plenty of new fresh faces to pop up. After all, the Shatterdome went through pilots quicker than All Bran Flakes goes through your digestion system. According to Del Toro, he wants to continue the United Nations approach to finding Jaeger pilots with which to fill up the sequel. Which makes me hopeful that we’ll see Rugby P-Klap on the big screen:

I’m hoping to bring the same idea I had in the first movie, that was to make it multicultural and humanistic as much as possible, to make characters from many nationalities or gender, to make them equal in the scope of the adventure, in the day-to-day of the adventure. So, we’re bringing a few characters that are new and hopefully doing good work managing those that survived the first movie. (laughs)

With a release date set, Del Toro is going to be very busy soon. Well, busier than usual. Here’s what his schedule looks like, according to the man himself:

I start designing in six weeks. It takes me nine months to design a movie like that. People see the movie, and they have to see that we designed everything in the movie, from ID cards or patches, pamphlets, posters, signs, sets. I start with a core team for about six months designing the jaegers and the kaiju, you know, so we know how many kaiju, how many jaegers. We are creating some new jaegers and a lot of new kaiju. We start [designing the production] in August.

Pacific Rim 2 arrives in April 2017. And I’m drifting in anticipation for it.

  1. I don’t understand people who complain about logic when the movie revolves around giant robots PK’ing giant monsters.

I wanted to love the movie really i did but i felt like the story was written by a toddler making up the rules as he went.

Why didn’t they just use the overpowered swords right from the beginning instead of trying to beat the monster up with a damn ship!! (As awesome as that was)

Because that’s how the Power Rangers do it.

That’s actually 100% the correct answer. Well kinda. The movie is a live-action anime, complete with all of anime’s silliness like always keeping your most powerful weapon until the end and shouting out your special moves as you do them. “ROCKET PUNCH!”

I liked that about it. Immediately thought “Power Rangers”. It’s a movie after all, so if they used the sword first it would kind of be like Guyver using his chest boosters first.

I only watched Pacific Rim last weekend.
I didn’t think it was as bad as everyone warned me about. I enjoyed it.

Can they pleeeeease use depth of field (ie. when the fist is in focus, the body of the jaeger should be waaay out of focus) with the CG monster fights this time so that it doesn’t look like people in monster suits fighting in a miniature city and splash pool.

The distance between the jaegar’s fist and its torso, when arm is out-stretched, is meant to be over a hundred meters, yet it looks like someone wearing a mechsuit. =/
