66thEmmyAwards

This has been a fantastic year for TV. We’ve seen old faithfuls go out with a serious bang, delivering the goods and more right up until the very last credit rolled, while new shows showed and instantly grabbed hold of the zeitgeist to stomp out their territory. The end results of this is one of the most stacked (and ridiculously difficult to choose from) Emmy Awards fields in years.

As expected, the phenomenal, critically praised sextet of Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, House of Cards, Downton Abbey and True Detective lead the front on the Drama side (and I really don’t want to be the guys choosing between the Lead Actors in a Drama Series nominations), while it’s good to see Orange Is the New Black getting some love after an outstanding sophomore season. Another nice, well deserved set of surprises is nominating Jane Fonda for her razor-tongued turn in The Newsroom and Andre Braugher for stone-faced (but funny!) police captain in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while TV movie The Normal Heart – which many reviewers thought of as award-bait – definitely lived up to it’s description.

Other than that, there are a few snubs this year (Where’s Hannibal? No love for Game of Thrones’ Charles Dance or Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany?) but no real big surprises, with the Emmy voters seemingly sticking to their usual tastes. Which unfortunately also means that Big Bang Theory once again has a stack of nominations. Sigh.

  1. I fing bleed that Big piece of shit theory is still even about let alone nominated. They should have a ‘best canned laughter’ award, that would suit it just fine.

The best performance on TV by anyone this year is Eva Green in Penny Dreadful.

I think it may have happened too late to be in contention for the Emmy’s, but yeah, she was phenomenal. Nobody does “possessed face” like Eva Green.
