Batman has one of the best rogues galleries in comics history, and with Fox’s upcoming prequel series Gotham, you will get the chance to see a lot of them before they became the colourful characters we all know. But for all the Penguins and Riddlers on display, there’s one rogue, the biggest of them all, that’s nowhere to be seen. I am of course speaking of the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker!

Showrunner Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) has previously indicated that eventually we will indeed be seeing Mr. J’s famously dolled up mug on the show, but that they weren’t going to just unveil their Big Bad right off the bat. And then it was revealed that actor Jon Beavers had been cast as an awkward stand-up comedian in the pilot episode, leading many to believe that he may actually be the man destined to become Batman’s nemesis. And it looks like he may indeed just be the one. Or not. Maybe.

According to Bleeding Cool, they’ve heard from their sources that Heller and co have a cunning plan *said in Baldrick voice* to keep audiences guessing as to the Joker’s true identity, something that has never been fully revealed in the comics.

Basically, every episode in the first season will introduce a character that might be a future Joker, each emphasising aspects of the character’s iconography, a card sharp, a flower seller, a clown, or just a guy with a very big grin.

All relatively unknown actors. All potentially a Joker. But only one of them being the actual Clown Prince Of Crime.

If done well, this could actually be a really cool way to introduce the character. Heath Ledger’s Joker – which is easily the yard-stick to which all on-screen iterations of the character will probably get measured against from now on – kept changing up his origin story during The Dark Knight, so that you could never get a real handle on why he does what he does. This is essentially Fox’s way of pulling the same trick, only on a much longer time-frame.

And that’s really what could make or break this approach, as audiences may get tired of the constant nudge-nudge wink-wink Joker teases after being subjected to it for week after week. Do it subtly though, and if possible, make the final actual Joker reveal not contradict ANY of the teases that came before, and it could be something really impressive to see.

Along with Joker gag (because that’s really what it is), a new TV spot has also been revealed that shows Ben McKenzie’s young Jim Gordon taking a walk to a crime scene, and in the process getting a a bunch of side-eye from those previously mentioned rogues.

“Gotham” is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), “Gotham” follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.

Gotham also stars Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara, Erin Richards, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Mazouz and Camren Bicondova. The show is set to premiere on Fox on September 22, 2014, but audiences at San Diego Comic-Con next week will be treated to a screening of the pilot episode that had all the people buzzing recently.
