First look – Jack Black as R.L Stine in GOOSEBUMPS

Growing up, I was a voracious reader of Goosebumps books. They were perfect gateway novels into more dangerous horror, with cheesy plots and decent twists. It wasn’t Twin Peaks cerebral material exactly, but for its time, it was great. A film is on the way now, with Jack Black as a fictional version of author R.L Stine. Check him out!

Even though Black and Stine resemble one another much the same way that a Ferrari resembles an old laptop, it still looks like a fun role as Black delves into a more bookish role. Even Black is aware of this, admitting that he didn’t exactly work on resembling the author, describing his character as “more of a sort of curmudgeonly dark, brooding beast master.”

And considering how every actor in Hollywood land who does a role such as this does it with Oscar Awards in their head, maybe not being so beholden to the source person can make for a refreshing change of pace. Here’s the official synopsis for the film then, which is out on August 7 next year. Rob Letterman directs.

In Goosebumps, upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series.

It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.
