Despite facing competition from three new movies, the apes were still strong over the weekend, securing the number one spot once again Here’s a look at how everyone did over the weekend, at the North American box office.

Taking second place with a respectable opening of $28.3 million, The Purge Anarchy may not have made the same amount of bank that the original flick did ($34.1 million), but it is decent nonetheless.  The latest Planes film, Fire and Rescue, didn’t exactly post overwhelming figures either. Off 19% from the original film which itself was a spin-off from Cars, Planes: Fire and Rescue only banked $18 million on opening, which is lower than last year’s other animated disappointment, Turbo ($21.3 million).

And coming in dead last in the new release category, was Sex Tape. Somehow, the idea of seeing a Cameron Diaz home porno didn’t resonate well with audiences, but it could barely get it up to $15 million when the time came to perform. Here’s a look at how everyone else did:

  • Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes – $36 Million
  • The Purge: Anarchy – $28.3 Million
  • Planes: Fire And Rescue – $18 Million
  • Sex Tape – $15 Million
  • Transformers: Age Of Extinction – $10 Million
  • Tammy – $7.6 Million
  • 22 Jump Street – $4.7 Million
  • How To Train Your Dragon 2 – $3.8 Million
  • Maleficent – $3.3 Million
  • Earth To Echo – $3.2 Million

Top ten departures this week include Begin Again, Jersey Boys and Deliver Us From Evil. Begin Again made a quick $11.7 million within a week, while Jersey Boys made Clint Eastwood and his studio $54 million after a couple of crooning weeks. Deliver Us From Evil has been a bigger disappointment however, with the action thriller barely denting the top ten after a three week run that ended with a worldwide total of $33.9 million.
