Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • We’re just one day into San Diego Comic-Con, and we may already have seen the geekiest thing around: Batman v Superman director Sack Snyder’s tweet of Henry Cavill aka Superman, dressed as a SuperJedi (see the “S” peaking out?) wielding a lightsaber.

And the fan fiction writers just lost their crossover-universe minds.

  • Screw Dauntless or Erudite or Abnegation, the only faction this Honest Trailer for Divergent belongs to is Frickin’ Hilarious!

  • As you may have heardGuardians of the Galaxy gives our first real extended (and badass) look at Josh Brolin’s Thanos the Mad Titan aka that guy in the end-credits scene of The Avengers that you thought was Hellboy. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige dished the dirt on just how Brolin became involved in the project, and just how much of him you’re actually seeing on screen.

“We knew [Thanos] was going to be in this movie.  We wanted somebody to be more than just the voice.  Josh did the performance as well.  We were looking at a wish list of, “Wouldn’t it be great if names,” and his name was on it.  And you look at his face and the performances he gives, he could be Thanos without any effects.  He has that kind of face and that kind of gravitas to it.

We reached out to him and it was one of those things that does not happen all the time but when it does it’s very nice, where he was totally intrigued.  He was a fan of what we did, he met with Jeremy Latcham in a hotel in London and learned about the characters a little bit.  I spoke to him on the phone a few times.  We ran it by James who loved it, ran it by Joss who loved it because Thanos is in this universe because of Avengers.   Then we shot him and recorded for it. “

  • The folks at HeyUGuys were on hand at the Guardians of the Galaxy premiere to interview just about every single person and his raccoon that had something to do with the movie. There’s some great stuff in those interviews, so I suggest you check them all out. But I want to draw your attention to their interview with Joss Whedon – who consulted in the outline of the movie – and his response when asked if Avengers: Age of Ultron would continue his trend of making movies with plenty of kickass females. Whedon then explained that “there are four prominent female roles in the centre of the movie”,

Okay, so that’s Black Widow, Maria Hill, Scarlet Witch and….? The likeliest candidate, based on fans calling for her and her prominence in the comics, would be the introduction of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. When pressed on the possiblity of her being the fourth female character, Whedon played coy and would only say that he likes her too.

  • Thanks to one of the sneakiest film productions of recent memory, these props of a very famous hammer,  sword and shield (or more accurately: Doomhammer, Dragon Sword and Lion Shield) as well as the logo treatment above them, revealed at Comic-Con yesterday, are just about the only things we’ve seen from Duncan “Moon” Jones’ Warcraft adaptation. Click here for a super hi-res version of the pic.

  • Dwayne Johnson may be able to bench press a wilderbeest and possess the most talented eyebrows in all of showbiz, but by the gods he sucks at keeping secrets! Barely a week after he all but confirmed that he”ll be playing Shazam aka Captain Marvel (but not the same Captain Marvel mentioned above, coz that would be weird), Johnson when and dropped this tweet yesterday, pretty much 100% confirming that he be playing Shazam aka Captain Marvel.

  • Legendary comic book artist Alex Ross has worked his paintbrush magic again created a new series of posters drawn from the original 1966’s Planet of the Apes. These posters are to be used as covers for Boom Studios’ “Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm” comic book series which delves further into events from the movie. http://www.slashfilm.com/acme-archives-alex-ross-planet-of-the-apes-posters/
  • Despite what you learned in Sunday School, it seems a lot of people are eager to spend 7 Days in Hell. I am of course not referring to the religious hell with all the brimstone and getting poked in the butt with forks by cackling demons (I saw a cartoon about it once), but rather HBO’s upcoming sports mockumentary. The comedy movie will see Andy Samberg and Kit Harrington star as two tennis rivals, bad boy Aaron Williams and Andy Murray-like Charles Poole, battling it out in a fierce 7-day long game at Wimbledon in 2004 (the story obviously inspired by the real life 3-day match, the longest in recorded history, that happened at Wimbledon 2010).

Joining Samberg and Harrington is a massive cast consisting of Fred Armisen, Lena Dunham, Will Forte, Karen Gillan, Howie Mandel, Soledad O’Brien (playing herself), Michael Sheen, Mary Steenburgen and June Squibb. Gillan plays a supermodel who intensifies the tennis rivalry as she was Poole’s childhood friend, who just recently made a leaked sex tape with Williams.

  • Looks like Warner Bros plan to keep audience up for 1001 nights. The studio has purchased 90-page script treatment from screenwriter David Weil, that will serve as an outline for an interconnected 7-movie franchise based around “The Arabian Nights”, the collection of public domain tales from which such well known Eastern characters as Alladin and Sinbad come from. Weil’s outline is said to be ” period reinterpretation of very familiar stories from a public domain tale, with modern tropes and themes that lend themselves to the big tent pole CGI-driven element that is vital in fantasy fare”
  • The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies is not even out yet, and already we’ve spent our time pointing out everything wrong with it. Shame on us. I think we all need to take step back from this whole thing… And point out everything wrong with the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
