TMNT: Aliens in a halfshell?

In what looks like an attempt to give TMNT fans serious neck ache it has been revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con that the green turtles will indeed be the aliens in a halfshell we so love. Wait, what?

Last year Michael “Baysplosion” (producer this time round) tried settling fans’ fears by saying they are keeping to the source material, you know, that those at the Techno Cosmic Research Institute (T.C.R.I.) who were ultimately responsible for the ooze are alien. So the ooze that mutates our reptile friends would make them kindda alien too… Since then a storm of discontent has still raged over the internet. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman said on Thursday that:

“We’d been fans of Star Wars from the early days, starting with the ooze being an alien substance in the original comic books… It’s fun to keep the soul of the characters, but take a step to the left or the right.”

That does’t sound very much like a ‘by-proxy’ relationship to being ‘alien’ via associated toxic goo now does it. This goes against what many, including myself, have grown up on over the last few decades but does that mean it’s going to suck? Not according to some. Fans who were privy to extended scenes at the Comic-Con say that the humour is awesome and that the kowabunga is strong, so who knows, perhaps next month’s new version of the Teenage ‘Alien’ Ninja Turtles, directed by Jonathan Liebesman, will keep fans happy. There was also a mild spoiler mentioned too, that Splinter’s (Tony Shaloub) first meeting with April’O’Neil (cough, Megan Fox, cough) included the sentence “It’s been a long time”…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens in theatres on August 8.

Will you be going to see it?

As will I, regardless of whether they are from Mars or not. Looks like fun! Still, could have chosen someone else other than Megan Fox.

I’m really excited about this. As long as the turtles are themselves and Shredder is mean, that’s all the formula I need. They could be from a volcano and it wouldn’t matter.

I just don’t think she’s been very good in anything I’ve seen with her in so far. Never know, she could be in this, but I doubt it.

Well, I’m not expecting award-winning performances. Plus I think she has good screen charisma.

And I’m glad that she and Bay are friends again.
