GODZILLA

If you were one of the people who walked out director Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot earlier in the year, and felt you could have done with a tad more monster-on-monster action, then I have a feeling that the announcements that came out of Legendary’s Comic-Con panel on Saturday will probably give you a – pun intended – monstrous grin.

Legendary CEO kicked things off by showing a video message from Edwards “who is locked up in a galaxy far, far away,” alluding to the director’s next gig of helming one of the secretive Star Wars spinoff movies. What was not kept a secret at all though was the confirmation from Edwards that he would indeed be back to direct a Godzilla sequel

“We get to make another one! First, we genuinely need a break from all the pressure of doing a major franchise and all the fanboy opinions that go along with that, so I’m here in San Francisco doing a little sci-fi film.”

Up next was the real kicker though, as some teaser footage played, showing the same type of military video footage from the Monarch organization found in Godzilla‘s opening credits played, with a voiceover thhen declaring “A secret remains hidden. There are others.” Those “others” were then introduced through classic movie clips showing off franchise classics Mothra (whose name you can glimpse very quickly in Godzilla), Ghidorah and Rodan, with a final tagline declaring “Conflict: inevitable. Let them fight!”

Cue Darryn wetting his pants.

As a tweet from Legendary later revealed, they had plans for a lot more of the classic Toho Co. movie monster to “[join] #Godzilla in future franchise installments”. Some have taken this to mean that Mothra, Ghidora and Rodan may not all feature in the Godzilla sequel, but could be spaced out over a few movies, but either way, it’s pretty awesome news.

Legendary weren’t done with the awesome monstrous reveals though, as at the end of their panel they showed a completely unexpected little teaser trailer. The clip revealed a dark and rainy island, with a dour British voiceover comparing it to the early days of Earth, talking about how “we penetrated deeper into the very heart of darkness”. Through the flashes of lightning and the dense foliage, massive creatures can be briefly glimpsed. The camera moves through the jungle until a skull-shaped rock/cave comes into view, followed by the noise of something big stomping closer slowly. The camera pans up to reveal the mon(k)ey shot: King Kong, as he roars viciously at the screen.

Cue Darryn wetting his just recently changed pants again.

The film being teased was revealed to be Skull Island, a prequel to King Kong, the cinematic rights of which Legendary recently acquired. This film is also the secret unknown project based on an established property that Legendary teased earlier in the year, and which many people erroneously thought would be a Namor movie. There are no Atlantean Kings here though, just the King of the Apes.

Here’s the official press release for Skull Island that Legendary revealed a few minutes later:

Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions. The film will be released on November 4, 2016.

So with Legendary now owning the rights to and developing new films based on Godzilla and King Kong, how long do you think it will take before we get the announcement that this is all a shared universe, and these movies will be building up to a Godzilla v King Kong: Dawn of Monster Justice movie? Also, do you think Darryn has enough clean pants, if that should be the case?
