Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

“Doctor Strange is a classic Marvel origin story, because he’s got one of the best origins ever. And it is our opportunity to take a left turn into the supernatural. Now, what is the definition of “supernatural”? It varies. We like the idea of playing with alternate dimensions. [Doctor] Strange, in a very [Steve] Ditko, crazy astro-trip way, traveling through dimensions and traveling through other realms is something we think is very cool. And playing with perceptions of reality.

I just watched the Neil deGrasse Tyson Cosmos series, which is amazing, and which may as well be an acid trip. It may as well be Doc Strange! It is a mind-bending [series], all based in physics and based in quantum mechanics, and we’re going to play a lot with the notion of that as an explanation for how the sorcerers do what they do.”

  • This is probably the greatest pic to come out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Because even Bat-villains just need to chill and check their Facebook next to the pool sometimes.

  • Author and mass murderer George R.R. Martin has written at least one episode per season for HBO’s adaptation of his Game of Thrones saga, but don’t expect that to happen anymore. The glacially paced writer has recently come under a bit of criticism from fans due to the fact that while he is still not done writing his sixth book, The Winds of Winter, the show is already about to start adapting stories from the fifth book in the series, a series Martin started writing all the way back in 1991!  But Martin has now revealed that he’s got his priorities straight and will be considerably scaling back his involvement with the HBO production so as to finish writing The Winds of Winter.
  • Poster of the Day: Ghost In The Shell

  • The first three pics from the final installment in Shawn Levy’s Night at the Museum trilogy has popped up online, and contains all the Ben Stiller and other actors dressed like historical figures that you’ve come to expect from the series.
  • Disney and Jon Favreau’s live-action Jungle Book movie may just have got at least an extra 10 minutes added to its running time. I’m guessing this to be the case, since they’ve just added Christopher Walken to the cast, and clearly all those unexpected pauses in dialogue needs to be accommodated somehow. And in case you’re wondering, Walken has been picked to voice orangutang monarch King Louie, aka the King of the Swingers, yeah, the Jungle VIP. He’ll also be joined by Breaking Bad and Revolution‘s Giancarlo Esposito, who will voice Akela, the leader of the wolf pack.

  • Following in Marilyn Manson’s footsteps of unorthodox guest appearances, Glee’s Lea Michelle has landed a role in the final season of outlaw biker series Sons of Anarchy. Her character is said to be “a truck stop waitress who bonds with Katey Sagal’s character”. I swear, if “Rachel” starts leading the bikers in an acapella rendition of “Don’t stop believing”….
  • From being the guy who made Felicity to spearheading the revival of the two biggest sci-fi movie franchises in history, JJ Abrams has certainly come a long way. But he couldn’t have done it without his most prized actor and the guy who made him the director he is today: Lorenzo Flarius!
