Ra's Al Ghul rears his demon head in this ARROW season 3 trailer

Straight off the bat (not that kind of bat – wrong franchise!) I have to apologize for that misleading headline. “Ra’s Al Ghul” literally means “Demon’s Head”, which makes for a snappy byline about how the next season of CW’s popular superhero TV series Arrow will see the famous comic-book villain making his live-action small screen debut (having been previously played on the big screen by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins).

But once you watch this trailer, which starts off with a brisk recap of Arrow‘s previous two seasons but then goes into full-blown new story territory, you will notice that while Ra’s Al Ghul is indeed revealed, flamboyant clothes with sword and all, the only thing about the almost immortal leader of the League of Assassins which you don’t see, is actually his head.

The trailer does make up for it by giving us our first look at Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) in action in his new “Arsenal” outfit, as well as the first hints of the Ollicity (yes, that’s what the internet is calling them) romantic angle finally becoming far more pronounced. Awwww…

That trailer was revealed during the show’s panel at this weekend past’s Comic-Con, and along with that very well received preview came the news that another comic book face, in the form of Ted Grant aka Wildcat, will also be showing up in the series soon.

In the comics, Grant is a member of the Justice Society of America, a group of older generation heroes (most of them having originated during WWII) who try to shepherd the young folk into the spandexed fold. Grant is essentially just a really good, world champion hand-to-hand fighter wearing a rather silly full body cat costume. What makes him special – and surprisingly not the reason for the feline accoutrements, as they came first – was that he had a spell placed on him that essentially gave him a very literal nine lives.

Despite starting to hew much closer to its comic books roots lately (see: Flash spinoff), Arrow still tends to keep things relatively grounded, so I doubt we’ll be seeing a magically long-lived heavyweight boxing champ in a catsuit showing up any time soon though.

Here’s the full, nearly hour-long Comic-Con panel for all you Arrow fans to enjoy, which include some serious hints about Thea Queen’s possibly supervillainy future. (And sorry, ladies and Darryn, this was not the panel where star Stephen Amell lifted up his shirt to show off his abs. You can find that over here.)
