I must say everywhere I look these days is something Disney. From epic earth battles to battles in the stars they are sweeping up genres like an ill-treated stepdaughter. Their last movie dealing with fairy tales was the rather good Maleficent that sought for a far darker re-telling of the ever popular Sleeping Beauty. This time round though it looks like they’ll be venturing down the musical lane, only this lane has far more thorns than pretty daises. The equally as dark mishmash musical Into The Woods promises to frighten you with a range of Grimm stories, only this time to a musical beat.
The original Broadway production, directed by James Lapine with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, was a smash hit that won several Tony awards and created a following of loyal fans. These fans were worried that certain elements in the adaptation to the big screen would be changed as Sondheim himself had come out and said some songs and even a death had been changed. Since he made those comments though he has backtracked saying that is not all true and the movie will be a faithful adaptation of the play. Either way you can be guaranteed that it’s going to contain a Tim Burton type feel even though it’s directed by Rob Marshall (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides). Why do I say that, well it’s got Johnny Depp doing his ‘weird’ thing again, though I’m not sure just HOW white his face will be this time. Here are some pictures to wet your appetite.
Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.
This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.
The cast includes James Corden as the Baker, Emily Blunt as the Baker’s Wife, Meryl Streep as the Witch, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Cinderella’s Prince, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, and Christine Baranski as the Stepmother.
Expect it to reach the big screen sometime around Christmas 2014.
