Guardians-of-the-galaxy-1a

They’ve saved the galaxy and cleaned up at the box office, breaking a couple records on the way, so now you get to tell us just what you thought of Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s latest cinematic effort. If you haven’t seen my 5-star review yet, the cliff notes is that while the movie isn’t 100% perfect, it is the 100% perfect blend of fantastically charming characters, big space adventure, amazing visual wizardry, crazy ideas and more hilarious dialogue than you can shake a racc-, oops, sorry, a furry bipedal character at. All of which combined made for one of the most fun-filled times I’ve had in a cinema in ages.

But we’re not a hivemind society (cue obligatory joke about Apple users), so people will always have different opinions. For example, I read reviews/tweets over the weekend where one person complained that Chris Pratt was too physically big (the reviewer actually said “fat”) in this, another that felt the movie had too much humour and should have been more grim, and also one in which somebody was gravely disappointed at this supposed sci-fi film’s lack of robots.

So what did you think of the film? Did you love it as much as Darryn, who was apparently doing his best impression of the great hero Kevin Bacon as he exited the cinema, or would you have preferred if these Guardians had rather just stayed out of your galaxy?

The movie was good, but the way the internet was going on about it I was expecting way too much it would seem!! Not my favourite Marvel movie, in the top 3 for sure but not number 1…..

Brilliant. By far my favourite Marvel movie, it didn’t take itself too seriously which is what all the others are doing.

I love this movie, it’s pure fun. The opening scene where he’s dancing along to his walkman & kicking the alien creatures set the tone & told me I was in for something special & I was not disappointed.

The only real criticism I have is the way Gamora was handled & her switch to the “good” side, came across as very convenient & with no real reason – it just happened.

I’ve managed to convince my colleague to watch it as well after telling her about it this morning. She was put off because “it’s got a talking raccoon, that’s stupid”.

The way I see it is that Gamora didn’t just switch, she was just waiting for the perfect opportunity to get out

True, still came across as a bit forced to me when watching it.

Speaking of killing machines, how cool was Nebula? 😀

It was funny that they added a “Hulk and Loki” type of moment in this movie as well!

That was funny. That scene at the end with a tiny dancing Groot too. And who expected this guy in the post-credits scene?

I doubt we’re seeing a Howard the Duck movie any time soon, and this was just James Gunn having some fun as he’s mentioned his love of the character in the past.
Some nice trivia though, you can actually see Howard in the movie BEFORE the end credits scene. When the Guardians first show up in the Collector’s lair, and he introduces himself, Howard is clearly visible sitting in one of those glass cages behind him. I only noticed this on my second viewing though.

Yeah, I read that as well, didn’t see him the 1st time around 😛

But would be cool if he made a random cameo in another movie or even Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D :p

Can you imagine if they do make a Howard the Duck movie? It would be the biggest dick-slap right in DC’s face. “You guys have Batman and Superman, and can barely get a movie together. We just made $100 million on talking raccoons in space and now we’re tackling cigar smoking ducks!”

Bwahahaha… Well it was a massive flop when George Lucas tried to make a Howard the Duck movie back in 1986. Maybe this was also like a small tribute to him seeing as Disney also owns Lucas Films? O_o

I thought the same thing on my first viewing, but in my second viewing, I realized she was good from the start. She never switched. She even had an easy opportunity to kill StarLord in the first encounter, and didn’t.

Went to watch it Sunday morning. My wife pointed to the poster beforehand and asked “What’s that?” Rocket Racoon I said. She: This sounds like kids movie. I’m going to walk out and do shopping if it is crap” So, that was before the movie. After the movie her reaction was: “That was brilliant…I don’t ever use the word brilliant to describe a movie, but it was. Rocket Raccon rocked.”

      Got to love it.

The wife and I really enjoyed it. It was well written and a real emotional roller coaster. I am unfamiliar with the Guardians of the Galaxy comics and didn’t feel alienated at all for not knowing the back story.
What I really enjoyed was that the film did not take itself too serious, and doesn’t expect it from the viewer. That allowed me to whisked away and be really submerged in it all.

Well not necessarily Darth Vader as Darth is a title given to certain Sith Lords which preceded either their chosen Sith name, or, in some cases, their birth name.

    Loved it!

Easily the best movie of the year. Every piece of this film was hand picked smartly! All the actors from the second string to the villains to the 5 guardians, they all acted their parts beautifully. The cgi team deserves an Oscar, all the visuals from the planets, space, space station and ships to the 2 cgi’d stars… They were phenomenal! I loved that the soundtrack plays such an integral part in the movie. It made me feel all the emotions… All in all a really well thought out and well directed film.

Those above average or ‘gasp’ bad reviews, just shows we can’t have nice things…

I couldn’t think of anything bad as yet… perhaps some nitpicked cheese at the end but otherwise it was a near perfect film.

In al fairness, I was left a bit underwhelmed by it. I desperately wanted to love this movie, but in the end, it kind of bombed.
The lead characters lacked the charm, or rather never convinced me to like them in any way.The humor was okay at times, but lacked the surprise humor that Joss Whedon loves to spring on a guy. Think Thor and his comeback of “His adopted?” in Avengers.

I thought the characters oozed nothing but charm. These are guys I wanted to hang out with when it was all done. And its not just because of the wisecracks. There’s some serious heart there, even tragically so in Rocket’s case.

Not sure I agree with you… with regards to the surprise humour, the scenes where Drax doesn’t “get” the metaphor were hilariously out of nowhere. “Nothing goes over my head, my reflexes are to fast” and other dead pan explanations were imo gold! Also, you gotta love Star-Lord’s song and dance at the start and end of the film. 😀

In the comics, Cosmo runs Knowhere (the giant hollowed out head of a Celestial) and is an incredibly powerful telepath. Think Professor X with fleas and the urge to hump your leg. He’s not a straight-up member of the team, but he does help them from time to time.
