Guardians, soul music and little else. There could be only one winner over at the North American box office, and it was a movie that had everybody hooked on a feeling.

Thanks to strong word of mouth, an early Thursday showing and a marketing campaign that was on point, Guardians Of The Galaxy easily nabbed the top spot with a weekend haul of $94 million. That’s slightly below the opening weekend of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million), but ahead of similar recent fare such as Thor: The Dark World ($85.7 million), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($91.6 million) and X-Men: Days Of Future Past ($90.8 million).

Internationally, GOTG is sitting with a tidy sum of $160.4 million, which means that by next weekend, the film should have turned enough cash to make that $170 million budget worthwhile. The only other new release this weekend was the James Brown biopic Get On Up, which took third place with a paltry $14 million. Here’s how everyone else did:

  • Guardians Of The Galaxy – $94 Million
  • Lucy – $18.2 Million
  • Get On Up – $14 Million
  • Hercules – $10.7 Million
  • Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes – $8.7 Million
  • Planes: Fire And Rescue – $6.4 Million
  • The Purge: Anarchy – $5.5 Million
  • Sex Tape – $3.5 Million
  • And So It Goes – $3.3 Million
  • A Most Wanted Man – $3.3 Million

Top ten departures this week include Transformers: Age Of Extinction and Tammy. The latest comedy of excess, obnoxious actors and a plot that just seemed to drag on made over $1 billion worldwide over a six-week period. Meanwhile, Tammy closed the door after five weeks with $87 million in the bank, off of a $20 million budget.
