Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • There are still plenty of condolences pouring in for the passing of Robin Williams, with many waking up to the sad news this morning. US television personality Conan O’Brien was busy recording the latest episode of his show when he got word of William’s death, and had the job of informing a stunned live audience. He and guest Will Arnett, who had both worked with Williams on several occasions, then took a few minutes to remember the man.

“Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most – from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets. The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin’s family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams.”

  • But in the end, it was the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, who awarded Williams a Best Supporting Oscar for Good Will Hunting and nominated him for 3 more awards, who really tugged at the heartstrings when they tweeted this simple, but emotional message, honoring one of his most famous roles.

  • Damn it, will whoever’s cutting all those onions please stop already! *sniff* And now to brighten up the mood around here a bit, and stop your eyeballs from sweating, here’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt aka Star Lord taking you on a tour of his spaceship, the Milano (which, yes, was indeed named after Alyssa Milano).

  • Keeping with Guardians, you may have seen my wild theory on just who Peter Quill’s father is in the movie (I picked Black Bolt for the Star Lord baby daddy, by the way), but CBM have an even more compelling theory: Quill’s father is actually Adam Warlock, the classic cosmic Marvel character who is a frequent member of the Guardians team in the comics and very, very closely related to the whole story of Thanos and the Infinity Stones. Also, in cased you missed it, Adam Warlock’s cocoon is actually in the movie already as an Easter egg.
  • And now swinging to the other side of the gender divide in Guardians, there’s a furor brewing on social media after fans have discovered that, just like with The Avengers and Black Widow, Marvel/Disney’s official merchandise for Guardians is sorely lacking any female presence, specifically Gamora. The fact that Guardians boasted a 44% female audience on opening weekend, and have been taken to task about this sort of thing previously, leaves me boggled that they’re once again marginalizing a large section of their audience.

  • I can’t believe it’s taken this long, but somebody has finally made an endless run video game based on Forrest Gump.

  • Listen carefully kids: Drugs are bad, m’kay? If you don’t want to take my word for all the braincell genocide that drugs can cause, then look no further than an absolutely ludicrous (and hilariously badly written) article printed in Esquire magazine about Megan Fox. Either the author is on the world’s most powerful psychotropics, or this is the longest and most elaborate joke Megan Fox has ever played on us.
  • Lee Daniels’ Richard Pryor biopic may just have landed its leading man Daniels had been auditioning several young actors like Mike Epps, Michael B. Jordan, Nick Cannon and Marlon Wayans (who was actually set to play Pryor in another biopic about the late legendary comedian that has since fallen apart), but Epps apparently emerged as the frontrunner after blowing away the competition with his test. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway are apparently in contention to play Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor.
  • Robot hands are to Star Wars what auto-tune was to Paris Hilton’s short-lived singing career, so it’s only apt that the latest update from Star Wars: Episode VII writer/director JJ Abrams about his Force for Change fundraising campaign would feature a cynernetic appendage. Said limb is holding a note announcing the outstanding news that the campaign has now raised over $5 million, as well congratulating a certain DC Barns on winning the competition for a set visit on the secretive sequel.

  • If you’re a parent who has been driven insane by kids who just can’t “let it go” and who constantly want to “build a snowman”, then you’ll be happy to know that while two sequels have been planned for Disney’s mega-smash hit Frozen, they don’t come with any earworming songs. Two new novels, aimed at younger kids, which will follow straight on from the record-breaking animated movie’s story will be hitting bookshelves next year. Both “Anna & Elsa #1: All Hail the Queen” and “Anna & Elsa #2: Memory and Magic” will be released on January 6, 2015 with two more novels to be released later that year and Random House Publishing intending to release 3 to 4 Frozen novels every year after that.
  • The Expendables 2 was probably my biggest cinematic guilty pleasure of 2013. It was trashy, cheesy and stupidly over the top, and I loved every second of it. Hell, it’s without a doubt the best Jean Claude Van Damme we’ve seen in a decade. But I have since come to learn that – SHOCK! GASP! – there are people out there who actually don’t enjoy the movie. And some can even find a whole lot of things wrong with it.
