Marvel starting development on INHUMANS movie; Vin Diesel to star?

Man, can I call ’em or what?! Okay, so maybe it was Bleeding Cool that did all the initial calling, but man, can I agree 100% with a call or what?! With the runaway success of Guardians of the Galaxy, it appears that Marvel are indeed looking to branch out with some of their more cosmically aligned characters, and have begun development on an Inhumans movie.

Collider is reporting that they will be following the same development process used on Guardians, which is that Joe Robert Cole, a product of their in-house writing program much like Guardians’ Nicole Perlman, has produced a script that they will now begin shopping out to filmmakers. Whichever director gets tapped for the gig will then be required to put their own  stamp on the existing screenplay, giving it some unique personal flavour.

With Guardians, it was Perlman’s characters, story beats and overall story that stayed in place while director James Gunn punched up proceedings with his own offbeat humour, quirky-cool tone and that unexpected soundtrack.

Inhumans probably won’t feature any groovy 1970’s earworms, but what it may just have though, is one of the Guardians themselves, as soon after the news broke, Vin Diesel (who voices Groot in Guardians) posted this cryptic message on Facebook:

“Vin and Marvel… you all made it happen!

I get the strange feeling that Marvel thinks I’m Inhuman… Haha.”

With Diesel not physically appearing on screen and only having three words of dialogue in Guardians, there certainly wouldn’t be any problem with him appearing in Inhumans as well. So who would he play? Well, you could make a case for Black Bolt, the King of the Inhumans, and not just because it would be Diesel playing another Marvel character that barely ever says anything.

And if that above statement left you in the dark, allow me to illuminate. Created in 1941 by Stan Lee and the legendary Jack Kirby, the Inhumans are a superpowered offshoot of humanity that have established their own society (sometimes based on the moon, sometimes out in deep space) led by their king Black Bolt, his queen Medusa, and their royal court. Besides the usual flight and strength power-ups, Black Bolt possesses a voice so powerful that even the barest of whispers can and has flattened mountain ranges, hence him being quite the stoic type, unless an errant giggle accidentally rearranges a continent. He acquired this power, just like all other Inhumans that have come of age, through a process called Terrigenesis, which triggers the gifts they were born with thanks to some genetic manipulation of their ancestors.

Said manipulation was conducted by the Kree – the race of people who Guardians’ Ronan belongs to – eons ago on early homo sapiens after it was discovered that the ancient space gods the Celestials (also seen in Guardians) had invested the potential for super powers within humanity. The Kree’s intention was to create a superpowered army to use in a war they were engaging, but the Inhumans eventually rebelled and formed their own society which they have since tried to keep as sequestered from the rest of humanity as possible. There is of course a whole lot more to their story, far too much to share here, so I suggest you hit Marvel’s page on them and get reading.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige has been dropping hints about a Inhuman movie since 2011, but this is the first time we’re getting any kind of real forward momentum on it. And by getting the ball rolling now already, my earlier guess that an Inhumans movie would be spinning out Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and would probably take that November 3, 2017 slot on Marvel’s schedule is looking even more likely to be true.
