Animated short HENCHMEN to become feature film

It is a very strange career choice to be a henchman. A super villain makes sense – they are usually compelled by their nature to do bad things and contemplate world domination. But what motivates henchmen? Surely it can’t be any more fulfilling than a desk job at a corporation. In fact it’s worse – practically everything you are doing is illegal, so it is more like being a pawn in a drug syndicate.

At least there you can hope to maybe one day be a high-ranking member of the syndicate or even a capo of some sort. But working for a super villain? Chances are you’ll only get any gratitude from your family and friends

Anyway, the movie Henchmen may or may not tackle these topics. All we know is that it will be derived from the following awesome animated short:

Cool, huh? I immediately get a feeling that I can only describe as Despicable Me having a baby with The Incredibles. The Verge has the official synopsis:

Hank is a lowly class three henchmen in the Union of Evil. It’s not how he pictured his career, but as he says, “you just play the cards you’re dealt.” When Hank is forced to train an excitable young dreamer, he offers the same trite poker metaphor. Instead, the boy steals an amazing super suit, changing everything.

Hank enlists a woman from his past, Jolene, to help extricate the Kid from suit. Soon, the Kid has fled, and worse, Jolene has been kidnapped. Worst of all, Hank has realized he is in love. Now Hank must break his “risk nothing” code, to save the boy he’s befriended, the woman he loves, and the entire free world!

The poster looks pretty cool too…

Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez production company is taking the lead, which does make me a little nervous. After all, Megamind was not the most memorable spoof on the idea. But we’ll know when Henchmen is released in 2016.

  1. That looks utterly fantastic. If they keep the same animation style, I will be completely sold.
