Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • You know all those movies you love now or in the last few years? Give it another decade and they’re probably going to get remade. And probably by Michael Bay. Hell, not even your beloved Pixar movies will be safe, as even something as highly praised as Up could get given the Bay treatment!

  • After playing director musical chairs for a few weeks, Marvel finally announced yesterday that Ant-Man has officially begun shooting. While that’s cool news, what’s most interesting is that as part of the production start press release, the studio have also slipped in a bunch of new casting announcements, including Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire), Judy Greer (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Michael Pena (End of Watch), Abby Ryder Fortson (Togetherness), David Dastmalchian (Prisoners), Gregg Turkington (The Comedy), Wood Harris (The Wire), rapper T.I. (Identity Thief) and John Slattery (Mad Men).

That’s a very, very solid cast, but the aforementioned “most interesting” bit is the inclusion of John Slattery, who played Howard Stark during a flashback in Iron Man 2. That all but confirms the recent rumours that Ant-Man will have prologue featuring a young version of Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym in the suit as he meets the original members of S.H.I.E.L.D., including Stark, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford’s character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

  • Disney’s Phineas and Ferb have a tradition of featuring all kinds of cool guest appearances (and not so cool, see: Cliff, Gareth) for their holiday specials, and for their upcoming Halloween Special, they’re getting just about the coolest guys to ever kill a zombie with a cricket bat and an LP. That’s right, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost will be reprising their roles from Shaun of the Dead for the animated show!

  • In Quentin Tarantino movies, people die. Like, a lot (and usually in very violent ways). Just how many people have died in his movies? Well, you can feel free to count them in this supercut of every single death in every Tarantino movie ever.

  • Good news, fellow Capetonians! The zombie apocalypse has been delayed! The conclusion of Paul W.S. Anderson’s video game adaptation franchise, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, was supposed to start shooting in our neck of the woods soon, but as star (and Anderson’s wife) Milla Jovovich revealed on Facebook yesterday, a certain little somebody had something to say about that.

Happy Monday everyone!

This was originally going to be a post to tell you how excited I am about flying to Cape Town, South Africa to begin working on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

But… My husband Paul and I just discovered that we are expecting another baby!!!

So after a lot of discussion, we thought it would be in everyone’s best interest to wait till the baby is born before we set out to try and tackle an RE movie. Between the stunt work and what will become my ever-expanding belly, we didn’t think pregnancy and zombie killing are the best combo! Lol! I imagine the only thing I’ll be killing in the near future is an endless supply of cupcakes. Yikes…

In all seriousness though, we want to make the best movie possible and that would be extremely difficult, to say the least, in my present condition.

I would like to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who has been working so hard on the movie in South Africa already and we are so looking forward to working with you all next summer. And when we arrive, it will hopefully be with the newest member of our little family! YAY!

Before I go, i want to also send one more HUGE thank you out to all my amazing fans who have been so patient waiting for the next installment of the RE franchise! YOU ROCK!

Thanks so much for understanding everyone! All the best! -m

  • We all hate people who text on their phones during movies (they need to be on the receiving end of a PK from a Brakpan diesel mechanic) but have you ever given much thought to how people text on their phones in the movies? Tony Zhou of the “Every Frame a Painting” series has, and has put together this really cool video showing just how representing this form of communication on screen has evolved.

So, if true, then releasing this in the build up to Episode VII makes a whole lot of sense, and, just as important, will definitely make a whole lot of money.

  • And now for your daily dose of WTF? Tom Hanks, Oscar and Golden Globe winning actor and Emmy winning producer has created iPad app called Hanx Writer that simulates the sense of typing on an old typewriter while using your tablet device. No, I don’t know why either.

Orci will of course be pulling double duty on the movie, as besides for writing, he will also be in the director’s chair despite never having directed a primary school Christmas play, much less a $200 million blockbuster. This has of course left lots of fans rather worried, but Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty in the films) wants to reassure everybody that Orci is indeed the right man for the job.

“Bob’s been there since the first Star Trek – by that I mean the 2009 one – so it seemed to make perfect sense that he come in as a director on this one because he gets it. He was always the most Trekkie of all of those guys anyway. He’s always understood the story the best, so it’s great that he’s going to be involved in the writing and directing.”

  • By the end of that Batman v Superman Comic-Con teaser, I’m sure the fanboys in Hall H were all foaming at the mouth. But what about the real end, the one they didn’t see?
