Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • They say clothes maketh the man, but apparently footwear may maketh the superhero. Some more set pics for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice popped online yesterday, and while most are the usual boring shots, there was one pretty interesting snap featuring Scoot McNairy in a pair of green boots/socks. That’s normally the stuff you wear when some post digital effects need to be added. What special effects could possibly be added to his feet? Some people are perhaps suggesting a few… FLASHes of lightning, if you know what I mean, but I think we may just be looking at the start of Metallo.

  • Attention all you manly dudebros who like to ask people if they even pick up stuff! According to Patrick Hughes, director of The Expendables 3, Trench Mauser and Yin Yang, the characters respectively played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jet Li in the mega macho movie, are in fact in a gay relationship. *gets popcorn to watch the homophobic fanboys’ heads explode*
  • Universal are moving ahead with their new movies based on Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles’s book, and for their first film, still tentatively titled The Vampire Lestat, they got themselves a faulty director. Josh Boone, director of hit romantic drama Fault In Our Stars, has been tapped to helm the new film. Because if you want to make a movie about people who suck the life out of others, get a guy who made a really weepy drama.
  • Poster of the Day: Drive

  • It would seem that Benedict Cumberbatch just Khan’t seem to get enough. The Star Trek Into Darkness (in which he played the villainous Khan) star has joined the cast of Andy Serkis’ Jungle Book: Origins to voice – yep, you guessed it – the villainous Shere Khan! Just don’t get confused with Disney’s Jungle Book, which is directed by Jon Favreau and has Idris Elba providing his un-Khan-ny vocal talents to the role.
  • When it comes to the Emmys (which will be upon us soon), kids generally care for it about as much as they care for other awards shows. Which is to say that they really, really don’t. That doesn’t mean they can’t be damn entertaining acting out parody scenes from this year’s nominees though.

That Rust Cohle wig and moustache should get an award all on its own.

  • Normally when we bring you stories about rumours surrounding popular franchises, it’s not to tell you to NOT listen to them, but that’s the case here. Some stories popped up last night about the development of a new chapter in the Halloween franchise, imaginatively titled Halloween: The Next Chapter, but according to the film’s official Facebook page, there’s no such movie. That doesn’t mean there isn’t another Halloween movie on the way though.

“We’ve been getting a lot of e-mails/tweets/Facebook messages lately about a project called Halloween: The Next Chapter. It seems that’s the latest buzz surrounding the next Halloween film and again it’s just not true. As we stated before, a new installment of Halloween is indeed in on track and moving forward and we are currently developing a script, to finally bring Michael back to the theaters!

More information will be released over the coming months and exclusively at Halloweenmovies.com. So make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook, so you can know first!”

  • Thanks to my wife, if you were to come over to my place, and check my Netflix queue, you would swear that I have a thing for really weepy foreign movies, very lame lawyer shows and American dramas about teenage girls. Luckily, that’s as far as my Netflix guilt goes. For other people though, it rapey Hitler tentacle porn anime.

  • Mark Wahlberg may just be getting oiled up and going deep. Oh get your minds out of the gutters, you perverts! Director J.C. Chandor (All Is Lost) has apparently started talking to Wahlberg to star in Deepwater Horizon, the true story of the 2010 BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico that caused one of the worst oil spills in history. Based on a New York Times article, Deepwater Horizon “revisits the acts of heroism that followed in trying to rescue men in the water, stories not known to the general public”. Wahlberg is said to be up for the role of “the No. 2 manager on the doomed oil rig in the story about what happened behind-the-scenes in the 48 hours leading up to and the day of the disaster.”
  • And just to prove that Marvel wasn’t kidding when they told us that Ant-Man had started shooting, here’s the first look at Scott Lang, the titular formic hero himself. Or it’s just Paul Rudd in hoodie after a really rough night on the town. Definitely one of those two.

  • I have some bad news guys. You may need to sit down for this one. You sitting? Ok, here it goes… Jennifer Lawrence and Alison Brie weren’t always 100% awesome. Now I know this is hard to believe, which is why I brought proof. Back in 2007, way before they had won awards and took up their roles as the Internet’s girlfriends, they starred in the pilot episode of Not Another High School Show, a Comedy Central show that thought it would be a good idea to cash in on the popularity of horrible spoof movies like Not Another Teen Movie. Luckily for us, everybody saw what a terrible idea this was and scrapped the whole thing (unfortunately the same can’t be said for those spoof movies). But now, seven years later, a clip of the show has surfaced, finally giving us a look at Muffy the Vampire Slayer. Unfortunately.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos, or artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses, feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.
