Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Holy exaggerated muscles, Batman! A new set pic has popped up for Batman v Superman showing Henry Cavill in a costume that’s been slightly tweaked from the one he wore in Man of Steel. The colours are slightly brighter, the “belt” is slightly different, and it has a a crap load more drawn on muscles!

Seriously, six packs I can understand, but was it really necessary to show off every major muscle in the upper leg?! I mean, Cavill is a huge, ripped dude, but damm…

  • And how’s this for getting all meta. ABC are going to develop a TV series based on the “Derrick Storm” series of CIA spy novels. The Derrick Storm series is of course penned by Richard Castle, the fictional writer/part-time homicide detective played by Nathan Fillion in ABC’s TV series Castle.

This is not the first time this show has gotten this meta though, as several of the Derrick Storm novels mentioned in the Castle have actually been published in real life, with Richard Castle listed as their author. A Derrick Storm comic book adaptation mentioned in one episode was also published in real life by Marvel.

  • Poster of the day: Pulp Fiction

  • As somebody who’s made the most successful movie of all time – twice – James Cameron is not in need of money. So if you’re wondering why it’s taking so long for him to deliver his planned three Avatar sequels, you might want to start there.

“There’s nothing I need to say as an artist about the state of the world and human affairs that I can’t do through the lens of the ‘Avatar’ universe. We’ve had a couple of years to think through the story arc of the next three films, and every day that goes by, I believe in the stories I’m telling more and more. We’re not coming out of the block fast to capitalize on the last film.”

  • And speaking of the Alien franchise (because there are aliens in Avatar and Cameron directed Aliens and just work with me on this segue, damn it!), we may still have a ways to go before we see a follow-up to Ridley Scott’s Prometheus onscreen, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see a follow-up at all. In September, Dark Horse Comics is releasing the first issue of “Prometheus: Fire and Stone”, a new series that follows up on events in the film and also brings the Predators back into the mix –  because clearly after the Aliens vs Predator movies, that’s really all we want to see, right? – and they’ve unveiled a trailer for the comic.

  • We may not be getting an Edgar Wright Ant-Man movie anymore, but it seems we will be getting another collaboration between Wright and Simon Pegg, one half of the stars (the other being Nick Frost) of Wright’s famed Cornetto trilogy of movies. Pegg spoke to BBC and revealed that the pair were back together again, but wouldn’t reveal much more details than that.

“Edgar and I were having a conversation the other day about it, and it has a title and everything. We’re kind of into a creative cycle now… The coming-together thing is without question on the table and will happen when we can do it.”

“We made three films in ten years and hopefully in the next decade we’ll make another three. I really love working with those guys and I wouldn’t ever not want to work with them. It’s not even a question.”

  • The werewolf transformation in John Landis’ American Werewolf in London is one of the most iconic and well executed make-up effects in Hollywood history. Which is why a homemade version, even one acted out by Landis’ screenwriter son Max, doesn’t quite work out as well.

  • Ever seen a big blooper or continuity error in a movie and wondered, “How the hell did nobody else on the set spot that?” Well, the answer is simple: Science! Researchers at MIT have conducted a study into this (because who needs scientists working on stuff like ebola and global food shortages, right?) and discovered that it actually has to do with the “serially dependent” way our brains process visual information. If that makes no sense, then just go read the article as it’s quite interesting.
  • Do you know how you know that you’ve made a movie that’s not just an entertaining blockbuster but an incredibly good film overall? When the guys from Screen Junkies do one of their Honest Trailers on your movie, and end up having to SERIOUSLY nitpick to find fodder for their jokes. Bravo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

  1. On the Superman pic: Henry Cavill actually shed most of the muscle after Man of Steel which took him 9 months to pile on originally. I loved his physique in the first film as it wasn’t pretty-boy-ripped but rather the build of a large athlete which I thought was perfect for Supes. I surmise that they weren’t expecting the go-ahead quite as fast as it came for the Justice movie and adopted the “maak ‘n plan” suit. I don’t like it. I thought the Man of Steel suit was the new look and this film looks to be going more retro with fan service. I really hope this movie does not suck but will guarantee I will watch it and decide for myself.

Loved Honest trailers, and yes, one of the better Marvel movies!
