Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller’s visually stunning “Sin City” graphic novels back to the screen in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Weaving together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales, the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more notorious inhabitants.

While Sin City can’t be faulted for its visually thrilling technique and instantly recognisable style, critics are divided on whether it’s a worthy sequel. Some are saying that the absence of novelty makes for a bloated, boring movie, while others have said that the new additions to the cast have helped keep it fresh, with lots of action and eye-candy. Currently sitting on a middling 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, I’d still think this is a must for fans of the original.

Sex Tape

Jay and Annie are a married couple still very much in love, but time and two kids have cooled their passion. To get it back, they decide to make a video of themselves trying out every position in THE JOY OF SEX in one marathon three-hour session. It seems like a great idea, until they discover that their most private video has gone public. In a panic, they begin a wild night of adventure to reclaim their video, their reputation, their sanity, and, most importantly, their marriage.

Despite being billed as an R-rated comedy, Sex Tape falls flat on both raunchiness and laughs. Kervyn gave it 2/5, and with a low 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, you’re probably better off giving this a miss.

The Rover

David Michod’s highly anticipated follow-up to Animal Kingdom, The Rover is set in a world 10 years following the collapse of society, where the rule of the law has disintegrated and life is cheap. The film follows hardened loner Eric as he goes to any lengths to take back the one thing that still matters to him.

With mesmerizing performances, gripping action and gritty filmmaking, Keryvn gives The Rover a solid 4/5.

The Purge: Anarchy

In this self-contained story of ultra-violence that follows on from the original horror-thriller Purge movie, ill-timed car trouble forces a young couple to flee from a gang of killers on motorcycles just as the annual purge, the one night of the year when all crime, including murder is permitted, commences.

With 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Purge: Anarchy is by some accounts more exciting and more thought-provoking than its predecessor, and is a worthy addition to the horror/thriller genre.

The Hundred-Foot Journey

Displaced from India, a young Indian man and his family settle in the South of France, where they open a small Indian Restaurant next to a famous Michelin-starred eatery. This is almost cause for an all-out war between the two establishments, until Le Saule Pleureur’s icy proprietress, Madame Mallory, recognises her rival’s undeniable brilliance for preparing masterful meals.

While not surprising in its plots, The Hundred-Foot Journey does well with a stellar cast and heart-warming scenes, plus plenty of food-porn.
