The wild west, the future and a desperate need for water. That’s basically the plot for Young Ones, all wrapped up. And with a hell of a cast attached to it, a film that looks might good. Pard’ner.
YOUNG ONES is set in a near future when water has become the most precious and dwindling resource on the planet, one that dictates everything from the macro of political policy to the detailed micro of interpersonal family and romantic relationships. The land has withered into something wretched. The dust has settled on a lonely, barren planet. The hardened survivors of the loss of Earth’s precious resources scrape and struggle. Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) lives on this harsh frontier with his children, Jerome (Kodi Smit McPhee)and Mary (Elle Fanning). He defends his farm from bandits, works the supply routes, and hopes to rejuvenate the soil. But Mary’s boyfriend, Flem Lever (Nicholas Hoult), has grander designs. He wants Ernest’s land for himself, and will go to any length to get it.
Directed by Jake Paltrow, the film has already had a run over at the Cannes Film Festival, although reaction was decidedly mixed. Although it was praised for a stellar cast and being beautifully shot, others felt that Young Ones attempts to do too much in too short a running time. Screen International saying that Young Ones “gives us a futuristic Western so bleak that its pitiless tone becomes downright mesmerizing.”
I still dig the idea for the film, so I’m keen on it. It currently has a USA release date of October 17.

Look really good, right up my alley. I miss Jericho, it was the closest to a Fallout series that we’ve gotten so far.
Two questions for this though:
Is his father voiced by Liam Neeson? Does he join the Brotherhood of Steel or is that in the sequel?

Is Jericho really good? I watched the first episode years ago on the telly & it looked like a giant ball of family-values-freedom-cheese.

I thought it was going to be like that too, but it got really good (though this was a while ago so fog of age might apply directly here)…
