Precisely two months ago Nick told us how Starz was bringing Neil Gaiman’s bestselling urban fantasy novel “American Gods” to TV, with Bryan Fuller (Hannibal), Michael Green (Smallville) and Gaiman himself producing. As he told us then “‘Gaiman’s American Gods tells a sprawling epic in which traditional Biblical and mythological deities go head to godhead with their modern contemporaries who reflect “society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.” The story is told from the perspective of Shadow Moon, “an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.”‘

In an exclusive interview with Crave Online, Fuller has given a few more details on the production status and scope of the upcoming project. When asked where they are in development Fuller replied:

“Right now we are breaking the third episode, and then if it does go, it would start filming sometime mid-to-late 2015 and probably wouldn’t be on anybody’s television until 2016. But that’s cruising along very nicely.”

He also confirmed that they plan to not just follow the events of the novel but expand the scope of the story beyond the point of view of Shadow Moon and Mr Wednesday.

“It’s basically following the events of the books but expanding those events, and expanding the point of view to go above and beyond Shadow and Wednesday. In that way, as with ‘Game of Thrones,’ there are dozens of characters that you’re tracking through the events and that’s probably the biggest similarities between the worlds, in that there’s a wide variety of characters at play.”

He also mentioned that they could possibly make use of some of the events and characters from the 2005 follow-up novel “Anansi Boys” as I believe that we have permission to use – since Anansi Boys are in the world of American Gods – that we would be allowed to use those as well.”

When asked how involved Gaiman would be in the series, he replied,

“Neil’s executive producing and he’s very involved. He’s given birth to the baby, raised the baby, and now Michael Green and I are marrying the baby… So the relationship is similar in that way, where he is absolutely integral to the process and also very excited just to see it coming together in the fashion that it is.”

His very succinct reply to whether or not Gaiman himself would write any of the episodes was “He’d better, He’d god damn well better.”

I hope it doesn’t get too distracted with other characters. Ultimately the book was about Shadow Moon. Most of the characters were just extras building towards Mr. Wednesday’s plans.
