After the wobbly 8th and final season of 24 left everybody’s favourite whisper-shouting counter-terrorist agent on the run from authorities four years ago, fans were clamouring to have Jack Bauer’s story wrapped up properly. And the producers responded by getting ambitious and starting plans to make a feature film continuation of the franchise. And then they didn’t.

Why these plans fell through was a combination of rejected scripts, star Kiefer Sutherland’s scheduling, budget concerns and lack of studio interest, but that all became moot when Fox finally greenlit 24: Live Another Day, an event-series (the new term for series that are shorter than the norm, and can thus give each episode a higher budget) that saw the usual 24 episode count slashed in half. The experiment was a success, with the recently completed series not only being a return to form, but also a ratings juggernaut for Fox as it easily surpassed the numbers of previous seasons (also a big jolt in the arm for Sutherland’s career which has featured a few misfires recently).

And off the back of that kind of success, it would seem that the movie bug has bit again. TV Line are reporting the show’s production company Imagine Entertainment are apparently kicking around a new pitch for a movie, one that has company boss and 24 executive producer Brian Grazer “particularly keen” to see it realized.

Just what that that pitch is is being kept locked down within the Imagine Entertainment hallways, as they have not yet run it by 20th Century Fox, who would be the ones producing and distributing this movie if it should come to pass. The fact that they are apparently this buzzed about it is big though, seeing as how they previously rejected several movie ideas as unfeasible.

Now it has to be said that we’ve been in this position before, and had to wait nearly half a decade for something to happen. Not to get too spoilerish, but if you’ve seen 24: Live Another Day, you would know that the show ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, meaning that this last series is not the bookend that some thought it would be. Clearly Fox – fully aware at that stage of just how well audiences were responding – was leaving things open-ended so that we could have at least one more last hurrah with Jack Bauer, arguably the greatest action hero modern TV has ever seen. Now the question just becomes whether Fox wants that final adventure to take place on the small or big screen.

  1. POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!
I’ve been a huge fan of 24 since the first season. Only Season 6 was a flop in my opinion. Season 8 started weak, and it’s clear that there’s a point when the writers were told that the show’s been cancelled, lets wrap it all up. The Ending to Season 8 was brilliant, I think that I may have shed a tear.

    DEFINITE SPOILERS!!
Then Live Another Day was made, and they dug up the loose ends again, and didn’t really get too far in terms of closure for the “Jack Bauer story”. The Ending closes on a “silent clock” which is used to signify that a character has died, this is *after* the silent clock used earlier in the episode to signify the death of Audrey. So did Jack die in the hand of the Russians? If not, then who?

I’d love more 24, I also just don’t want them to keep digging Jack back up after a previous attempt at “closure”. Maybe focus on the new excellent Kate Morgan character?

They got so close to tying up all the loose ends in 24:LAD, that I say give him one big send-off in a movie and call it a day. Jack Bauer is already firmly embedded in pop culture and there’s not much more they can with the character. He’s been through just about anything and everything a character can take, so it’s time to give him the peace he needs. Whether that’s a death sentence or not is up for debate.
