Extras-750-final Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Hi. Hello. Allow me to shake your hand. See, that’s how normal people greet each other. Clearly though, 22 Jump Street‘s Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Mercedes (Jillian Bell) have some other ideas for greetings. Ideas that involve your genitals.

  • Stick around long enough in Hollywood, and your name gets attached to just about every big role out there. Such is the case with Denzel Washington, who has been talking about some of these rumoured roles. While he admits that he may be “too old” for Marvel’s Black Panther, he does get all shaken and stirred about the idea of him playing James Bond some time in the future.

“Yes I would! Who’s doing James Bond now… Daniel Craig. Did they shoot another one? Everybody should tweet Denzel is James Bond! Send it to the studio. We start the Denzel is Bond campaign today! James Washington. Denzel Bond.”>

  • Its an universally recognized (and by universe, I mean just around the office here) fact that Japanese movie trailers are superior to normal ones. And to prove my point, I would like to present thse Guardians of the Galaxy airing in Japan, where the movie will finally be opening this coming weekend.

  • When it comes to the Great Rumour-Off of 2014, the only thing that can out-rumour Star Wars: Episode VII, has to be True Detective season 2. We’ve seen all kinds of unconfimed reports for the Emmy Award winning show’s sophomore season, and now here’s another: For the longest time now, we’ve been hearing that Mad Men‘s Elizabeth Moss was a shoe-in for the show’s female lead, but Variety is reporting that Rachel McAdams is now also being considered for the role. As a fan of both ladies’ work, I would really be happy with either.
  • Following on from yesterday’s promo image reveal for The Avenger: Age of Ultron which gave us our first look at Paul Bettany’s Vision, a new, much more detailed pic has popped up online. Following the clues, the image appears to be concept art for the character which Marvel gave to Sideshow Collectibles to use for crafting their incredible tie-in statues. Some are claiming though that this is nothing more than just some fan-art based on the aforementioned promo image. However, the fact that this image is being pulled down just about everywhere it’s been uploaded (so give this a good ogling, before it’s gone), does give it some legitimacy.

  • Speaking of superheroes and how they look… It would seem that anything Superman can do, Ant-Man can do better. The reveal of Superman’s new costume in Batman v Superman was met with a bit of criticism online (some from me) for the much more noticeable fake muscle padding in the suit. There was a good reason for these muscular enhancements though, as star Henry Cavill was apparently just finding it almost impossible to maintain the insane mountain of muscles needed to fill out the suit. Maybe he should have been taking some workout tips from Paul Rudd.

Rudd’s co-star in Ant-Man, Michael Douglas, told MTV that the funnyman turned titular hero has been klapping that gym so hard, that his Ant-Man suit just couldn’t contain all those muscles.

“Paul Rudd is ripped. He’s been training and working out for this picture for a long time. He was so cut, that they had to soften his costume up, with all the built-in six-packs and all of that.”

As you may know, the 69-year old Douglas is playing Hank Pym – the original Ant-Man – in the movie, who hands over his tech to Rudd’s criminal turned hero Scott Lang. And apparently this means that we shouldn’t expect the veteran actor to be getting his superhero suit on.

“My costume will be hung up and Paul will be wearing it in good form.”

  • I feel the need… the need for lowered expectations. Jerry Bruckheimer’s long in development Top Gun sequel is finally getting some movement, but not in a direction I’m liking. Bruckheimer and co have tapped screenwriter Justin Marks to pen the script for the sequel to the 1980’s Tony Scott/Tom Cruise classic. Marks is the man that also penned Worst Video-Game Adaptation of All Time contender Street Fighter:Legend of Chun Li, the only movie that has ever put me to sleep while simultaneously giving me an aneurysm.
  • This fan-made Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer may have some really dodgy sound editing, but the cleverly spliced together visuals actually look like something that we might actually see from Warner Bros.

“I was rather insulted my phone wasn’t hacked, actually. I kept desperately looking at the list of people whose phones were hacked, hoping to see my name.”

While Mirren is making light of the matter, she is quite aware of its seriousness saying that the hacking was “infantile” and “offensive”. The irony though of the 19-year old Mirren’s tongue-in-cheek disappointment at her lack of nude pics, is of course that the internet is already littered with nude pics of the Oscar winner, who was quite the on-screen sex goddess in her early days.

  • Remember how Captain America: The Winter Soldier co-director recently said that we would be getting the full title for Captain America 3 soon? Well, soon may just be tomorrow. The official Captain America twitter account is teasing the announcement of something tomorrow to coincide with the Blu Ray release of the second film, and the only that makes sense would be the title.

  • This incredibly cool video entitled “What happened to PG-13?” runs for 18-minutes, which may be a bit long for some, but I implore you to watch it, as it not only gives the rather interesting origin of the PG-13 rating, but also how it has completely changed how films are being made today, quite often in a very negative way. So if you’ve ever griped that movies that should be adult affairs are being sanitized to appeal to kiddies – or even if you’re just a student of film – then you have to check this out.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos, or artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses, feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.
