Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • I bet if I asked you to tell me anything about Batman’s parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, the only thing most of you will be able to tell me is that they get killed. And they do. A lot. As this supercut reminds us.

Faculty member Arnold T. Blumberg, who presents the course, had this to say about it:

“This series not only provides action-packed entertainment but also profound statements about the nature of heroism, the great responsibilities that come with wielding great power, our willingness to trade freedom for security, and much more. Every generation has a modern media mythology that serves as a framework for entertaining as well as educating about ethics, morality, issues of race, gender, class, and so on.”

“One thing we’ll do is dive into the impact of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film, which proved two things: Mainstream movie audiences are not remotely tired of superhero movies; and Marvel Studios can now release a sci-fi adventure that actually features talking trees and raccoons. It’s not that they’re getting away with it—they’ve created a universe in which fans completely accept these developments, and they’re ready for even more.”

I’m still waiting for my invite as guest lecturer.

  • Poster of the Day: Tak3n (Which physically hurt to type, by the way. Also, this poster makes zero sense, as that’s supposed to be Hollywood sign, with the “E” reversed to make a “3”, except, well, there’s no “E” in “Hollywood”)

  • Looks like CW really like being in the Flash business. The network has announced that the show’s premiere episode, which leaked earlier in the year, will be looking a little different to the way those scurvy pirates remember it as its actually getting an additional 3 minutes added to its running time. Just what has been added is unclear, but some are speculating its some kind of post-credits stinger. Along with the expanded running time, the season itself is getting a bit longer. The network has bumped up their initial 13-episode order by an additional 3 episodes bringing the total to 16, if my grade-1 maths are correct. You can probably expect that tally to be upped to the standard 23 episodes at some point in time.
  • Here’s a new clip from Jessabelle, that proves that no matter how dirty your secret may be, it’s always going to get dug up eventually. Stay out of Nick’s yard, is what we’re saying. Who knows what ginger secrets are buried there.

  • As if I wasn’t looking forward to The Scorch Trials enough after how much I enjoyed its predecessor, The Maze Runner, now Game of Thrones Aiden Gillen has joined the cast of the sequel as the film’s main villain Janson aka The Rat-Man. Director Wes Ball has also now been confirmed to be returning for the second film.
  • It’s been a while, but the Bad Lip Reading gang are back! And they’re tackling the zombified The Walking Dead with hilarious results!

  • BONUS POSTER! Here’s the first bit of promo for Lavalantula, a new SyFy movie that sees some Police Academy alums in Steve Guttenberg, Leslie Easterbrook and Michael “That guy that made all those noises with his mouth” Winslow having to save Los Angeles from “a swarm of — wait for it — giant lava-breathing tarantulas that roast their quarry alive!”. Yes, that is actually the spiders’ mouths, and they didn’t just have a very spicy curry the night before.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch is an absolutely amazing actor who can just about do it all. JUST ABOUT. Because as this Cumberbatch narrated 2009 BBC documentary shows, the man just cannot say the word “penguins”.

  • Iron Man may have kickstarted Marvel’s movie empire in 2008, but what you may not have known that it was very nearly Black Widow that was actually the first Avenger out of the gate. Unfortunately, the plans for a Natasha Romanova solo ended up being scuppered all because of a really bad Charlize Theron sci-fi movie.

“We changed the timeline for everything that came after DOFP – so X-Men 1, 2 and 3, even The Wolverine. So Jean [Grey] was not killed in Last Stand, nor was Scott, and a whole lot of other things rippled.”

  • This weekend past saw the premiere of Saturday Night Live‘s latest season, and the season opener was hosted by none other than everybody’s favourity schlubby and goofy guy turned galaxy guardian Chris Pratt. And it was *cough* Marvel-0us! They skewered everything from He-Man and Thundercats to NFL controversies, but the one sketch that stood out the most due to just how accurate it was, is this piece showing off how the success of Guardians of the Galaxy means that Marvel can now do pretty much whatever they want.
