THE WALKING DEAD spinoff show's character descriptions give us the first hints of the story

We’re just a few weeks away from The Walking Dead‘s fifth season, and with the show looking to just be picking up where it left off when it comes to being a network ratings juggernaut, you have to wonder why it took this long for some kind of spinoff show to be developed. With the show’s insane popularity, anything associated with it is all but assured to be devouring fans’ dollars like their zombies devour brains.

And this thought may have finally dawned on the folks at AMC when they recently greenlit a pilot episode for a new “companion series”. Other than the fact that this new show would be set in the same world – originally created by comic book writer Robert Kirkman and then adapted for TV – and that it wouldn’t be focusing on Rick, Daryl and the rest of the established TV series characters, we knew absolutely nothing about it. But the guys at TV Line have managed to get hold of what appears to be casting character descriptions which may just shed some light on the show.

– SEAN CABRERA – A Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

– CODY CABRERA – Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

– NANCY TOMPKINS – A thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.

– NICK TOMPKINS – Nancy’s screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

– ASHLEY TOMPKINS – Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom but it’s time to get out of Dodge.

– ANDREA CHAPMAN – A somewhat wilted flower child, fortysomething Andrea — yep, another Andrea! — has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

First of all: ANOTHER ANDREA?! SERIOUSLY? Was our unbridled hatred for the first one not enough? Secondly, if there’s one thing you may notice that all these characters have in common, its that these people all seem to have very normal, un-zombie-like problems. That certainly lines up with recent rumours that this show is actually going to be focusing on the earliest days of the zombie outbreak, as people are just discovering what’s going on. If you recall, Sheriff Rick Grimes is hospitalized in comatose state before the outbreak and wakes up after everything has already gone to hell, so we’ve never got to see the beginning of the end either in the original comic or the TV series. The absolutely outstanding Walking Dead video game has touched on this period, but not too extensively, so it will be quite interesting to see just how society collapsed into the steaming mess that it is now.

What do you guys think? Would you be interested in a prequel or are you completely over zombies by now and wish this while undead fad would just die?

  1. I’m not sure about the “earlier days” thing as it sets quite a definite end-time for this, else it will end up in full-on zombie apocalypse, as per Walking Dead

I would love to see Clementine appear in either of the series.

They’ve already said that this new spinoff will not interact with any of the characters already introduced in the mythology. That could change though.
