David Fincher’s latest, Gone Girl, is just over a week away from release but its already cranking out some stellar buzz. As a Fincher fanboy, this is great to hear, as – with the exception of the first two episodes of Netflix’s House of Cards – we’ve had to wait 3 years since his last offering behind the camera. Don’t expect any such delay for Fincher’s next project though.

The Oscar nominated director seemingly developed a really good working relationship with Gone Girl screenwriter Gillian Flynn as the pair are teaming up to spearhead HBO’s upcoming remake of the UK conspiracy series Utopia, with Fincher looking to direct all the episodes in the show’s first season according to what he told The Guardian.

Here’s what the helmer had to say about the project:

“I like the world of it. I like the characters – I love Dennis’ [Kelly, creator of the UK show] honesty and affinity for the nerds. I mean, I’ve always been a bit of a junior conspiracy theorist cos I don’t have time to connect them all! But it’s nice to see that somebody has.”

As to exactly what is getting connected here, the UK version of the show – which James had a look at recently and really enjoyed – is described as following “a small group of people who find themselves in possession of the manuscript sequel of a cult graphic novel called The Utopia Experiments which is rumoured to have predicted the worst disasters of the last century. This leads them to be targeted by an organisation known as The Network, which they must avoid to survive. Using the manuscript, they must uncover the meaning hidden in its pages before the disasters depicted become reality.”

The Network? Is this just a thinly veiled sequel to Fincher’s Social Network where Mark Zuckerberg is going to be revealed to be behind it all? DUHN DUHN DUUUUUHHHHNN!

Jokes aside though, the last time Fincher delved into sorta kinda similar (if you squint) conspiracy type stuff was with the fantastic The Game, so I’m definitely keen to see him stretch those particular creative muscles again. And who can say no to a weekly dose of the guy who gave us Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac among others, especially after the last remake of a UK show that he was attached to was the brilliant Golden Globe winning House of Cards?

HBO hasn’t revealed an episode count or a timeline for the Utopia remake yet, but Fincher has indicated that this “will keep him busy for most of 2015”.

Utopia is a mini series, so it makes sense for Fincher to direct all of the episodes – the original has six per season.
