Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Poster(s) of the day: Mortdecai
  • It’s official: Indiana Jones 5 has a cinematographer. That may not be such an attention grabbing headline, until you realize that said cinematographer is Janusz Kaminski, Steven Spielberg’s go-to guy for decades now already. Does this mean that Spielberg is also coming back soon for another crack of the whip? Well, we’ll have to wait and see. And also pray that George Lucas and his ideas about nuclear resistant fridges and CG gophers stay far the hell away.
  • I know I really shouldn’t, especially after the whole “not based on any comic book” fiasco, but I can’t help being excited for Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot. There are just far too many people behind and in front of the camera whose work I really enjoy for me to write it off. One such person is Miles Teller, who will of course be be playing Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic, and is here to tell you that this movie will not be anything like the previous films.

“The tone of this film is completely different. I think that [a more grounded approach] is what people are into. You’re dealing with these characters, but you’re making them real people in how they exist day-to-day. People wanted it to be taken more seriously than the kind of Dick Tracy, kitschy, overly comic-book world. [There will be no] Michael Chiklis in a big Styrofoam thing.”

  • Look, when you’re working for Industrial Light and frakking Magic and you do some new Star Wars concept art, even if it is just for fun and will never be used in a movie, you can still be damned sure that I’m going to feature it.
  • One of my biggest complaints about Gotham is how it’s cramming in just about every recognisable face from Batman’s rogues gallery way too quickly. And it would seem that not only is this practice continuing, but they are doubling-down on the face cramming as Nicholas D’Agosto (Masters Of Sex) has now been cast as “bright, charming, idealistic Assistant District Attorney” Harvey Dent, who will of course go on to become the villainous Two-Face.
  • I rather enjoyed the latest Godzilla, even if it had its flaws. Which flaws, you ask? Well allow me – actually the guys at CinemaSins because I’m a lazy bastard – to enlighten you.

  • Shhhhh… If you’re quiet and listen real carefully, you can hear all the furries and slash fiction writers on the internet rejoicing, because according to writer/producer Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Apocalypse will be looking to explore the relationship between Beast and Mystique more, as well as look at how Mystique is the child of Charles and Erik. Oh wait, not like that.

“I will say that [X-Men: Apocalypse] is definitely the close of a trilogy for those First Class characters, which isn’t to say we won’t see them in future movies, hopefully we will, but it’s a completion of an arc for them.  I think that the friendship between Erik and Charles, which has always been so integral to the franchise, is something we’re continuing to explore and hopefully deepen with Apocalypse.  And the relationship between Beast and Mystique is a really interesting one that we didn’t have a lot of time to explore in Days of Future Past, so we’ll have an opportunity to do more of that in Apocalypse.”

“Part of what’s really interesting about Mystique’s character is that she is, in some ways, the child of both Erik and Charles.  She grew up with Charles and then she sort of became a woman with Erik, so her being the cross-pollination, if you will, of those two philosophies and those two men is something we can explore in the movie too.”
  • I know this may seem hard to believe, but there are people out there who still have not seen the original Star Wars trilogy. If you know such a person, and have completed beating them with a pool noodle for an hour (making lightsaber noises the entire time, of course), you can get them to watch this clip with recaps Episodes IV-VI in just 3 minutes.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos, or artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses, feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.
