Mark this date in your calendar, folks! Hashtag it even like all the cool kids! For today is the day that I, Kervyn Cloete, tell you about a Kristen Stewart movie that I’m actually looking forward to. Yes, everybody’s favourite necrophiliac mouth-breather has made a movie which instead of leaving me baffled as to how she got the role, has instead left me baffled as to why she hasn’t acted like this before.

Camp X-Ray is the debut film from writer-director Peter Sattler which deals with the heavy issue of America’s detainment of enemy combatants at the controversial Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, and while most of the reviews out of Sundance – where the film debuted earlier in the year – peg Sattler’s first effort as laudable but making some rookie mistakes, almost everybody is in agreement that Stewart is the best thing about the movie. Reviewers have been singing her praises for her performance, which is a far cry from her Twilight days where she had seemingly resigned herself to only ever showing two facial expressions: Surly constipation and constipated surliness.

And looking at this new trailer, I have to say that the reviewers may have got this one right, leaving me very intrigued to watch this movie.

A young woman joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small town roots. But she ends up as a new guard at Guantanamo Bay instead, where her mission is far from black and white. Surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive squadmates, she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees. A story of two people, on opposite sides of a war, struggling to find their way through the ethical quagmire of Guantanamo Bay. And in the process, they form an unlikely bond that changes them both.

Camp X-Ray also stars Payman Maadi and Lane Garrison. It is scheduled for international release on October 17, 2014. No local release date has been set yet.
