Video game Myst makes its way to the small screen

One of my all-time favourite games was the classic Myst, designed and directed by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller and developed by Cyan Worlds way back in 1993. Well hold onto your pants because Legendary TV and Digital Media have made a deal to turn the fantasy adventure into a frigging television series! Not only that, but much like Defiance there will be a game released at the same time (though details on whether this will be another online game that ties into the series have not been released).

According to Deadline using the television medium would afford developer Cyan Worlds the opportunity to explore the rich and deep history that Myst offered players who were willing to spend hours roaming about (might I add with no guidance, little story and no death). Cyan Worlds had this to say:

“Cyan’s goal in working with Legendary is not just to create a compelling TV drama but to develop a true transmedia product that will include a companion video game that extends the story across both media.”

Much like the eagerly anticipated Quantum Break Cyan Worlds wants to explore the interaction between viewer and game:

“Seventy percent of tablet owners use their device while watching TV at least several times a week.  Cyan sees the potential to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling to a new level.”

Now I loved me some Myst but to be honest am not sure how one would turn that into a series as the game was very much a non-linear experience, which is why it was so revolutionary for its time. We’ll just have to wait and see I’ll keep you posted with more as we hear it.
