With its street-level superheroics and badass ninja mythology, Daredevil is perfect for a live-action adaptation. Alas, the last time Hollywood took a crack at it, it nearly ruined Ben Affleck’s career and left audiences wishing they were blind. But now Marvel has the Man Without Fear back in their wheelhouse, and will be using him to kickoff their collaboration with Netflix next year.

Thus far we’ve seen nothing but some uninteresting leaked set pics of Booardwalk Empire alum Charlie Cox as lawyer Matt Murdock, but nothing of him in bedeviled suit. But during the show’s panel at the New York Comic Con this past weekend (via CBR), Marvel finally unveiled the first look at Cox in his costume. And I can say, unequivocally, that his new look will not make you see red.

Because it isn’t.

Now before you start going crazy and – heaven forbid – longing for the Ben Affleck days, know that Marvel hasn’t suddenly decided to go all Batman Begins on Daredevil. No, as the comic book studio pointed out, this black DIY getup is Daredevil’s “first” costume -implying that the traditional red costume is still coming – heavily inspired by his appearance in Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.’s “Daredevil: Man Without Fear” 5-issue miniseries from 1994. Check out a pic from that comic below, and you’ll see it’s actually a fairly accurate recreation with some nice upgrades thrown in.

What’s interesting about Marvel choosing this to be Daredevil’s first look is that in that book, Miller explored how close to the edge Daredevil actually gets. He essentially posits that based on everything Matt Murdock has been through, he should be a villain, but instead he battles against that dark side and instead chooses to be a hero. This ties in perfectly to what showrunner Steven S. DeKnight stated previously that “he’s one bad day [away] from becoming Frank Castle [aka The Punisher].”

That certainly gives us a very big clue as to the darker tone of this series, an assumption that was bolstered when Cox informed the audience that having the show run on Netflix “allowed it to suit a slightly older audience.” That added maturity isn’t the only thing that being released on the streaming platform brings to the table though. Cox went on to explain that the Netflix format of releasing an entire season of a show at once changed the way that the story was approached:

“Because there isn’t a week in between, you don’t have to spend so much time reminding an audience what happened. And also, ending on a cliffhanger is pointless, because ‘what happened? oh I can just click a button.

“It’ll feel more like a thirteen-hour movie.”

Along with that first costumed look, Marvel also released a new shot of Cox as Matt Murdock, red sunglasses and all, as well as some cool new concept art for the series, drawn by none other than Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada.

It was also unveiled that Quesada had actually picked Cox to be Daredevil way before Marvel had ever regained the film and TV rights from Fox. Once they had those in the bag again, it was a simple matter of making an offer to their man (without fear). Along with that tidbit, it was also revealed that the show now has its very own Netflix website which not only gives us that first logo up top, but also the series’ synopsis:

“Marvel’s Daredevil” is a live action series that follows the journey of attorney Matt Murdock, who in a tragic accident was blinded as a boy but imbued with extraordinary senses. Murdock sets up practice in his old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York where he now fights against injustice as a respected lawyer by day and masked vigilante at night.

Daredevil is expected to debut sometime in 2015, and also stars Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Vondie Curtis-Hall as Ben Urich and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, among others.
