What the f@#% am I supposed to do with this first trailer for POWERS?

It’s been quite the long, twisty road to get Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s Powers to the screen. Way before the current superhero boom, there had been talk of an adaptation of the critical favourite comic book, and at one stage they even shot a pilot episode with Jason Patric in the lead. But alas, it was not to be.

Until March of this year, that is, when video game console manufacturer Sony decided they wanted to get into this whole streaming TV business. And to go toe to digital toe with the Netflixes of the world, they needed a big draw, which they seemingly found in Powers.

Led by our very own Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium, Maleficent), Powers is set in a world where superheroes are not just an everyday occurrence but have become celebrities and follows Christian Walker (Copley), an ex-superhero turned cop, and his partner Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward) as they walk the “powers” beat, investigating crimes of a super powered nature. Set to debut on the Playstation Network to all PS Plus subsribers later in the year, the show had a panel at New York Comic Con (via CBR), where audiences were treated to not only a chat with the cast, which includes Eddie Izzard as the series’ first antagonist Wolfe, but were also given the first trailer. And it looks amazing.

Well, damn, Sony. You definitely have my attention now. That looks incredible, and I’m admittedly surprised that they’ve kept the comics’ mature language and offbeat humour. A short clip from the show was also played to the crowd in attendance that had Copley’s Walker explaining to his new partner how a girl temporarily developed the power of flight after she performed oral sex on him. As Bendis explained after the clip rolled, “You will not see that on ‘Gotham,’ I promise you that”. No, siree, you won’t.

While I’m not 100% sold on Copley’s US twang yet, I am loving everything else I’m seeing, especially Noah Taylor – who I’ve always felt to be very underrated an actor – as the villainous Johnny Royalle. You can check out more of him and the rest of the cast – also featuring Izzard as Wolfe, Logan Browning in costume as Zora and Olesya Rulin as Calista, the girl Walker and Deena rescue on their first case – in some newly released pics below:

If Rulin’s Calista looks much older than you remember her from the comics, that’s because she is. During the panel Bendis revealed that the show won’t be a “word-for-word adaptation” of its source, and that they rather “wanted the show to be its own entity”. The comic book famously opens with Walker and Deena investigating the murder of Retro Girl (played by Battlestar Galactica alum Michelle Forbes), one of the most popular Powers in the world, but the comic book writer explained that the Tv series “doesn’t follow the opening of the comic, but it’s a story you’ve seen in the comics.”

One of the other big changes is Browing’s Zora, who in the comic is already a veteran superhero who, unlike most other “Powers”, doesn’t want fame and fortune, but rather to genuinely be a hero. This TV series versi0n of the character though is still busy figuring out the person she wants to be, with Bendis adding that “We’re meeting [Zora] at her most formative years. [She] represents the paths that are in front of anybody in [her] position.”

And for those of you with Playstations (don’t worry, I’m with you guys there), who may be wondering if there are any plans to screen the series on some other platforms, I unfortunately have some bad news. It was revealed that one of the reasons Sony agreed to back this endeavour at all was that Sony was using the series as part of their campaign to promote the Playstation 4, making it “unlikely” to see the show released anywhere else.

For those of you in possession of Sony’s gaming console though, you can expect to see Powers on PSN sometime in the next few months.

Dammit and I said this weekend that I wouldn’t get a PS4 after that price increase. Not because it was too expensive, but because of the way they handled it O_o

After watching this, I need to get one O_o

Excited too! But think buying a new PS4 may be a bit extreme just for the show!
