Tanks, washed up superheroes and charming Mexican animation were the highlights of the North American box office this past weekend. Here’s who rolled in and came out on top.

Fury

Annexing the first place behind enemy lines from Gone Girl, David Ayer’s Fury scored over $23.5 million from 3137 cinema screens. While that’s a decent range for any flick to have, it’s also about a third behind other recent adult fare such as The Equalizer ($34.1 million) and Gone Girl ($37.5 million). In terms of war movies however, Fury is ahead of recent releases such as The Monument’s Men ($22 million).

On the animated side of things, The Book Of Life opened up to $17 million in third place. That’s just slightly behind Laika’s The Boxtrolls ($17.3 million) and ahead of Reel FX’s debut flick Free Birds ($15.8 million). It’s a  fairly solid start, as crossing the $20 million mark on opening is usually reserved for films from the Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar stable thanks to massive marketing budgets.

Expect Book Of Life to eventually bow out as a small hit. Here’s how everyone else did at the box office over the weekend:

  • Fury – $23.5 Million
  • Gone Girl  – $17.8 Million
  • The Book Of Life  – $17 Million
  • Alexander And The Terrible,Horrible, No Good Day  – $12 Million
  • The Best Of Me  – $10.2 Million
  • Dracula Untold  – $9.8 Million
  • The Judge  – $7.94 Million
  • Annabelle  – $7.92 Million
  • The Equalizer  – $5.4 Million
  • The Maze Runner  – $4.5 Million

Top ten departures this week include Addicted and The Boxtrolls. The latest Laika animated flick has managed to earn over $82 million worldwide, with a four week run at the US box office, while Addicted has made a mere $12.7 million over two weeks in domestic sales.

On the local side, your most popular movie in South Africa right now is Gone Girl, proving that our nation does indeed have some taste after all. To the tune of $149 959.
