Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Are you watching Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the moment? If not, you’re missing out on a show that may have stumbled in its genesis, but has since become the absolutely incredible slice of Marvel Cinematic Universe TV goodness that fans had been waiting for from the start. Not sold yet, because clearly I’m just a fanboy? Well, then maybe this will get you to tune in: Next week’s episode, the 4th in its sophomore season, will feature the debut of the very first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron!
  • And keeping things with superheroes… Ray Fisher is about to embark on a true rags to cybernetic riches story. The actor is really only known for some stage acting, but earlier in the year landed the high profile gig as Vic Stone aka Cyborg in Batman v Superman. And has been recently revealed, he will also be getting his own solo film in 2020, an achievement that Fisher didn’t actually know was going to happen:

“I didn’t know the extent to which DC and WB had planned on taking my character. When I signed on, I just wanted to be part of this world. But that specific information, I found out then and there. I didn’t think I’d be getting my own stand-alone film… Let me tell you, man, people are in for a hell of a treat.”

  • If you read my story on Interstellar this morning, then you would have seen me mentioning that I totally worship Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. That masterpiece is getting a re-release in the UK next month as part of the Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder festival, and has thus we now have the first new trailer for the movie in 40 years. And it’s awesome.

“It’s not a DC Comics film. It’s a Vertigo film. That’s a different slate of films, and a different announcement.”

In case you’re still confused, Vertigo is a DC Comics imprint that exists completely separate from their normal titles which granted its comic creators a lot more creative freedom to tackle more mature titles. The most interesting thing about Gaiman’s statement is that he specifically says “slate of films”, as in there are others. This “announcement” just became serious news.

  • Poster of the day: Batman Begins

  • So there’s a new Annie remake on the way, and if I ever had any doubts as to whether this movie is being marketed at my demographic, it was all confirmed with this new promo for the movie that plays its most famous song accompanied by emojis! Now if you’re anything like me, this will just be a bunch of illegible hieroglyphics, but luckily EW had us old fogeys covered with this (hilarious) translation.

  • In case you missed it, Shia LaBeouf has been even more Shia Labeoufier than usual lately, with his latest bit of whackjobbery landing him in court after he violently disrupted a Broadway production. This was of course not his first dustup on Broadway, after he got involved in a physical altercation with his Orphans co-star Alec Baldwin and was promptly fired and replace by Ben Foster in the stage production. But in a very candid interview that I highly recommend you guys read, the 28-year old actor reveals that all this madness – which included him stalking his co-stars, sleeping outside in a park and wanting to “intimidate the f@#k out of Baldwin” – was all just really intense method acting. That and his seriously messed up relationship with his dad, who he Skype calls when he wants to feel pain for a role.

This is of course not the same pain as he probably felt when he cut up his own face and had a tooth pulled just to look more authentic for his role in Fury.

  • Apparently, George R.R. Martin – like the rest of us – thinks that Batman & Robin was really dumb, in particular, the much maligned bat nipples. He took such umbrage to this costume faux pas that in his “Game of Thrones” novels he began coining a term – “As useless as nipples on a breastplate” – to poke fun at it. Well, Mr. Martin, you’re probably not going to be too happy then when you see these first set pics from HBO’s Game of Thrones TV series’ upcoming fifth season, in which we see the debut of a group of popular female warriors known as the Sand Snakes. All wearing breastplates with nipples.
  • Godzilla spoiler alert: Juliette Binoche dies within the first 5 minutes of the movie. But, according to the actress herself, that tiny bit of screen time was apparently enough to get a certain badass filmmaker bawling.

“[Quentin] Tarantino said to me, ‘That was the first time I’ve ever cried during a 3D blockbuster. I had to take off my glasses to wipe away my tears.’ I took it as a compliment.”

  • And for today’s bit of complete and utter randomness, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Star Goats!
