Mark Wahlberg appears to be pulling a reverse Halle Berry/Charlize Theron. No, that is not an exotic sexual position. Rather I’m referring to how both those actresses won Oscars for their performances in fantastic dramas and then went on to make completely irredeemable codswallop in the form of Aeon Flux and Catwoman respectively. Codswallop may be too kind a term for Wahlberg’s last major outing, Transformers: Age of Extinction, and factoring that level of crumminess into my reversed theory means that he’s probably a shoe-in to get the Oscar next year for The Gambler.

Luckily for Wahlberg, crackpot internet theories is not the only thing he has in his favour though, as this first Red-Band trailer for director Rupert “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” Wyatt’s remake of the 1974 James Caan drama shows a film that looks incredible. Wahlberg is supported by Jessica Lange and John Goodman, with the latter especially stealing the show here with an expletive laden monologue teaching us all about the level of “f@#k you”. Yes, the level of “f@#k you”. Just watch the trailer and you’ll understand.

Jim Bennett (Academy Award®-nominee Mark Wahlberg) is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Academy Award®-winner Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance…

The Gambler also stars Brie Larson and Michael Kenneth Williams, and was written by William Monahan (The Departed, Body of Lies, London Boulevard). It is scheduled for limited international release on December 19, 2014.
